Hi guys, im new to this forum and new to Red cameras.

Finally im converting my setup from dslr 5DIII to Red, and the Raven is going to be my first

I don't have any experience with Red, therefor i'm asking for some guidance to pick up the right gear for the camera.

I need a small setup for my tripod, gimbal (AllSteady6) and 15mm rig.
How little Red accessories can i get away with? i don't have much money, so i would only like to purchase the necessary gear to have my Raven up & runnin.

Here's what i'm thinking of buying, please let me know if i should get anything else or different/less expensive.

1. Raven camera
2. Red 4.7" touch LCD > http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc2-red-touch-47inch-lcd/730-0019
3. Red Station Mini Mag > http://www.red.com/store/products/red-station-mini-mag/750-0055
4. Red Brick Power Pack > http://www.red.com/store/products/red-brick-power-package-dsmc/740-0035
5. Red Mini Mag SSD 250GB > http://www.red.com/store/products/red-mini-mag/750-0082
6. Top Handle 100mm > http://www.ebay.com/itm/SmallRig-QR...m-Nato-Safety-Rail-For-Red-Epic-/251824265860
7. Cable-less V-Mount > http://woodencamera.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=1276
8. Pogo extender for LCD with gimbal > http://woodencamera.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=1294

Is there anything else that i need to get the camera in use?
And is it okay to buy the "Cable-less V-Mount" from woodencamera instead of the "DSMC2 V-LOCK I/O EXPANDER" ($1.900) from Red's website.
i don't think im gonna need any of the connection it offers... or do i?

Any guidance is much appreciated

Thanks for your reply..

Most of my work are music videos, and usually i just blast the stereo out load close to the camera.
I'm using the camera's mic for that...

So i'm guessing the Raven doesn't have a built-in mic?

But yeah, for documentary work i would have to record the audio separate..

I never used any sync device ever, so i'm not sure if i would me missing it.
I'm an old sound engineer and it has never been a problem for me to sync manually by ear.

Please keep me posted regarding the built in mic, thanks

Great thanks. If they sound as good as a dslr mic, I'm good hahaha

I would add some additional media, coming from DSLR you will find red eating media quick

( i would ask a Raven user to give specific run time for a 250gb / just an example my weapon shoots for 37min in 6k on a 512gb card. fastest I have been able to offload a 512 card is 40min using laptop / thunderbolt reader. makes shooting a full day something to plan for.

I would also add either the BASE I/O expander or The V lock.... the outputs will come in handy for whatever your trying to shoot.

If your looking for a spot to save some $$$ try using off brand v locks instead of red bricks. There is a awesome thread that breaks most of whats out there down.

Great info, Marcel M, thanks.

I don't know what the CTRL, SYNC or HD-SDI are for, i only know HDMI and AUDIO I/O which i'm not going to need when shooting music video's.
It would be nice to hook up an extra monitor when shooting on a tripod, but the whole idea of this thread is for me to know which accessories is vital to have a Raven ready for shoot.
I'm talkin the minimalistic way :)
Also, I never used an external mic for that, and i'm not going to start because that's just more weight on the cam and more stuff i have to be aware of and take care of. Less stuff, less bullshit.

If i buy the V-mount from WoodenCamera instead of Red's Baseplate Expander, i'm gonna save $1.250 which is a shit load of money for me.

I don't wanna pay $1900 for something i might use in the future, but yeah i get your point. Thank you.

I could take that money and spend it on some more SSD's.
I know that 250gb isn't enough, but god damn the 500gb is insanely expensive.. i mean, what are they thinkin hahaha

buy used 512's
1. you are going to need them
2. they will not be worthless once you decide you want a weapon, or the next camera that comes along in a couple of years.
3. used ones are just as cheap as new 240's

Great info Jordan.. I would definitely do that instead.
Thanks a lot, that's a great money saver ;)

in camera mic sensitivity falls off very quickly with distance - so you may only get clapper recorded if scene is far from camera. Make sure you can see blip on audio monitor from clapper.

Thank you Mike, that's great advice.. I'll remember that!

You don't NEED the I/O V-lock unless you need to bring in audio or work on a gimbal. I do a lot of shooting with Lavs and it works for me, but I don't use anything else on the expander than the headphone and audio in. The scratch audio works a little better than a DSLR and has a gain function but you'll have to set all that off the meter since you won't have a 3.5mm input. Also you won't have the ability to power the camera externally for gimbal use - the bricks are too big to keep mounted on the back. You will need some sort of lemo power in to control the camera.

The 4.7-inch display is really small for setting focus of your shooting close to wide open a lot. You constantly have to zoom in to set focus. The 7-inch display is light years better and is a lot easier to set focus quickly.

The bricks last anywhere from 30-60 minutes and the 250GB card is plenty big enough IMO. I was shooting for 5 hours a day and only used about 280GB a day shooting at 8:1

The DSMC2 outrigger handle is very handy if you're going to be carrying it around a lot.

I have the 36" LCD pogo cable incase I need the length for something. I just coil it up twice on the gimbal's arm.

That V-mount doesn't have a DC-IN, so there's no way to power it if you're on a gimbal.

The DSMC2 7-inch display is worth every penny if you need to get focused fast. Got it last week in place of the 4.7 and it's night and day. I did a little review of each that I will put online soon. If you always have time to set the shot up, then the 4.7 is fine. You will need to use the magnification function every time to fine tune focus.

I will use Red Block battery in every occasion, especially with gimbal. It doesn't seem like a good a idea to use cord when mounted on a gimbal.
Which one (battery-input module) are you using? And what will you recommend instead the one i chose?

I will definitely look forward to your review of the LCD's. Please post the link here when it's ready :)

Thanks again

You can't run any battery on the back of a RED unless you have a really expensive gimbal. None of the DJI products can support that additional weight or give the vertical articulation.

I have the I/O V-lock module.

Luckily my Gimbal can handle up to 8lbs.
All the gear (Raven, SSD, RedBrick, V-Mount) weighs 6.64Lbs. LCD is moved from camera to top of gimbal.

My heaviest lens is 1.48 Lbs. So i can almost make it work ;)

Thank you very much for all your advice. I'm definitely gonna get the 7inch LCD.
