Have a Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L rental along with a 1.4 and 2.0 extender on the way for a nights shooting at Valley of Fire.

There is that theory... wonder if the quakes in Japan were related? After all, the moon was nearing perigee at the time.

so the event is over has anyone captured it with their epic-m's....

"...This full moon will rise in the east at sunset and should look especially big at that time because of what's known as the "moon illusion."

In the U.S., we are still waiting for sunset...

I was planning to shoot this, but it's going to be quite dark in terms of ambient light by the time the moon rises.

Would HDRx™ do anything for this? I do not know what the slowest framerate is...12fps if I'm not mistaken? So 1/24th shutter and an extra track to preserve details in the moon?

Maybe I'm wrong I have no idea...and maybe 5D with some bracketing does a better job.

Shot with my D90 on a 70-300 zoom (no RED yet), but looked pretty cool.

Nice Tim looks awsome. Did you do any timelapse? Great pictures are rolling in here in The Netherlands. It was amazing weather today. Shame I found out too late about this spectacular moonrise. Like you I would defenitly taken a water scenery but would have taken at least two exposures at the time. One to smear ever bump in the water.

Jesper...It's funny though...if it rises and you have background to compare too than it is for sure massive. But high in the sky its hard to see. I have pictures of last september with the same focallength as now (300mm f2.8) and it for sure is bigger. Also if I check focus at 10x assist it moves pretty damn fast.

I'm set up in a bird blind on top of the Ranger's station at Valley of Fire with a Canon 800mm 5.6 "L" series. Windy beyond belief. My issue with using such a hellish lens is that I'm no longer documenting the supermoon realistically.. To full represent this phenomenon I'm in the camp that says to use a lens in the normal range, say a 32mm. An 800mm with a 2x? What difference does it make what moon it was?

It did absolutely not look any bigger here in Denmark, perhaps a bit brighter though.

It is actually slightly bigger than usually (I regularly shoot the full moon). Shot this yesterday:
