I am not on Facebook anymore, so I might be missing something, but why is it so silent about Raptor XL?
There are no real world tests of its ND filters, no reviews and informations about fan noise, workflows or the sensor split issue. To my eyes, there is no conversation at all. Meanwhile there are almost 600 posts in the Alexa 35 thread.

And why are there no accessories of 3rd party manufacturers?

What‘s going on? Is nobody hyped about this camera?
 
It's a fair question. There has been a decent amount press coverage from the popular camera sites (Cine D, Newshooter, YM)
and posts and/or videos from retailers.

I have my doubts that many of those in the market for the XL are the type to be on social media posting about it.
Rental houses, production companies, higher end owner/ops likely make up the XL market and traditionally have
a less vocal more business like approach to new acquisitions.

This is in contrast to a camera like the Komodo which was much more financially accessible and definitely appealed
to a demographic that might have a heavier social media presence. Komodo still has a bit of fanfare despite being out
for over 2 years.

I don't remember too much chatter from Venice 2 when it was released yet it seems to be doing pretty well.

Alexa 35 might be considered a different kind of an announcement as that camera was rumored to be in existence for
years and is Arri's 1st true 4K s35 camera after over 10 years of the Alexa's release.

Admittedly, this is ultimately conjecture on my part.

Hopefully there will be some tests posted soon.

On a similar note, I'm still surprised no one ever posted any tests on the new REDcode ELQ mode
and that's been around since this summer.

I have Personally been searching all over the internet for both V-Raptor XL and V-Raptor S-35 info. I have some info about the XL mixed in with the V-raptor thread that I can transfer over into this thread or I can start a "V-Raptor XL Sample Fooage and Review Portal" thread. I started the Alexa 35 thread because it was something I was really interested in like the Red Komodo Thread and the Red V-Raptor threads. So I have continued to Post in both for those like myself whom are interested in those cameras and all other things about these cameras.


Like Brian stated, I don't think Owners or renters of the XL are the Youtube or Vimeo sharing types, however there are some exceptions but they are few and far between.

When you think of V-Raptor XL as a Ranger brother of the V-Raptor, the situation isn't very different. There are plenty of samples and tests for Monstro and Helium, less so for their Ranger counterparts. Probably because the footage coming out of them with the same sensor isn't so different. I'd still be interest in coverage about the extras like ND performance and some other little details in the XL.
 
I'm currently using Raptor XLs alongside Alexa Mini LFs on a high profile limited series. So far the XLs have been great. Fast versatile cameras. The internal ND function is great. The naming convention is a bit strange since we are so used to the numerical gradients 3,6,9,12,15 etc but I'm getting used to it. Image wise the NDs seem excellent so far. I did notice some terrible color banding the other day that might have been due to heavy internal ND along with a polarizer. We pulled the pola and things were fine. Haven't had much free time to test that discrepancy again but it's on the list.

I'm wired into the camera's menu function via ethernet at all times and the response time is excellent. It is a simple way to have complete control ay my fingertips. I'm also using Red Control Pro on this project not only for camera control but also wireless CDL / LUT adjustments. I'm still getting used to the interface but it's a very powerful and efficient tool.

One of my few gripes is the video out of the camera is definitely more of a "video tap" than a WYSIWYG image. It's always fun to be surprised at how much better things look later but I wish the cam outs had a bit more processing power.

So far I'm impressed. And these days it takes a lot to impress me.

This is the only thing I want to know about but there are no tests or reviews anywhere. If the internal ND is faulty when using a Polarizer, it works just like the Sony FX9/FX6 does and that is honestly a deal breaker. The extra 15k for non-functioning ND is not worth it IMO.
 
Thanks guys for filling this thread with informations! Interesting to hear about this “ND issue”. I feel similar to Austin. There is no in depth review about the internal ND and I would not buy this camera until seeing good test results.

Additionally I am very curious about the sensor stich on Raptor XL. I’ve extensively tested this issue on the normal Raptor shooting against sunlight with different PL mounts. With and without the “anti-reflection-matte” from RED. (I don’t know how they call this updated piece in front of the sensor). And there are scenes where you can spot the line in the middle of the frame. Especially when shooting lens flares.

But what I’ve seen in one video, that the camera design of XL looks way more different compared to the normal Raptor in the sensor area. (See image attached)



Hope they could fix this issue for all XL cameras. But who knows?

Just a quick update as my show has come to an end. For now. Polarizers in front of the internal NDs are an issue. Other than that I really grew to love the Raptor and Raptor XLs. We had very few problems onset and we put these cameras in nothing but extreme weather day in and day out. I didn't really dig into the technicality of how the internal NDs work but they were pretty flawless and very fast / responsive. Since I was remotely controlling multiple cameras at once I got used to shifting their NDs by 1/3 stop increments constantly on the fly to keep things consistent during all of our exterior scenes. Framerate changes, record mode changes, frameline changes etc were all fast. The XL is a much bigger body. The added power ports etc are helpful but I gotta say the small form factor of the V-Raptor is hella sweet. Putting on one of the new Atlas 42mm 1.5x Mercury anamorphics on a stripped down V-Raptor was amazing. Super small maneuverable camera with a legit beautiful full frame anamorphic lens. We could put that thing anywhere and it always looked fantastic.
 
Had an interesting talk at Panavision today. They told me, they will most probably not buy any Raptor XL camera, because of a to short flange distance to attache a Panavision Mount.

But they‘ve got a great solution for the small Raptor. But that would still be very sad for the more „panavision-style“ Raptor XL.

They are also struggling with RED’s RMI Module design for the new RED Monitor. I still don‘t understand why there’s no option to use the RED Monitor without the 15mm Monitor-Rod-Mount attached to the RMI Module.
Will really miss the DSMC2 Lemo Adapter A on the side of the camera.

Note: This was the opinion of some guys I spoke with. Could be totally wrong or different, but still wanted to share it!
