  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raptor X - Komodo X Beta 2.0.1 Face Auto Focus tests (compilation)

Nice. Seems similar to other still lenses, really always going to be at the mercy of each lens motor. Would be cool to see Nikon do cine lenses with built in zoom/focus/aperture someday.

AF motors are designed with four compromises in mind: how fast it should move, how smooth it should move, how quiet it needs to be, and how much glass weight it should handle (there could be also a 5th, that how to put that motor with required specs in the lens barrel without makinging it too bulky, but lets ignore that). So depending on the size, price, optical formula of the lens, you may get different performance. Then there is encoder sensors inside the lens that report to the camera that "I'm at position X at the moment", and regarding the accuracy, some of these sensors are better than others. There is always different acceptable tolerance for messing thing up for every class of still lenses. A 600mm f/4 should be more precise in every movement and reporting of that movement, than say a 50mm f/1.4. And the whole issue of messing up is different in still world. One misfocus shot out of forty, is not a problem at all, but two misfocus frames in 30fps video renders as "hunting", especially with blurred background where changing the size of bokeh balls will be noticeable. So I'll say you should give these optical engineers at Nikon and other companies a bit more time. Even the latest lenses in their line up is designed at least two years ago (thats how it typically takes from design board to mass production), and the priority in most of them have been still shooting.

Does anyone have this problem: The autfocus works fine, getting smooth into perfect focus – just before a single, tiny 'hunt' back slightly out of focus...on the EF 24-70 2.8 II

Yes, with pretty much all my AF lenses and my KX RF mount on latest firmware.

I hear some lenses are better than others.

Most of my glass is RF L, and AF is unusable even in an interview setup because of the rapid rocking back caused by this ‘hunt’.

Does it more in "Single" instead of "Continuos" for you or have you found a workaround? It seems like this could be easily fixable and is a bug – because first it hits focus perfectly...

on which FW are you? I'm on a KX-Z and had several issues with an adapted E-mount lens from Tamron on FW 2.01, my older Sony-Glass worked better. After the update to 2.08 it significantly improved. Best performance is usually to expect from native mount glass in my case Z-mount.
