RAPTOR - 1st Impressions (coming from DSMC 2 Weapon 6k and Komodo) - no science, charts, or really knowhow...Just my take outta the box.
It's heavy. Komodos almost feel hollow when you pick them up with your thumb and index...You wouldn't dare with this...Which is a good thing! But for long HH verité work, consider your lenses wisely. This thing weighs much more than it looks. Not DSMC Magnesium heavy obviously. But you approach it with "nimble" in mind and you immediately respect it.
I was frustrated by the lack of touch screen, and then started to prefer it. The Komodo screen isn't sensitive enough or my fingers are too meaty. Either way, the buttons seem deliberate and strong when you are mashing through menus. I will want to program quick keys though. It can take awhile to drill down into something you'll want to toggle. I miss the wheel on the DSMC2 Sidekick.
The side handle from the Komodo works well, but I immediately had to get used to more of a forward angle, or you lose your screen. Perhaps with the upper monitor, the side screen won't be as paramount.
Quiet as can be! Like not even on. The whole box is rock solid without a single creek, or fan sound or anything. The build quality just feels fantastic. I can't stand plastic-y cameras, but heavy LFs are not my thing either. This is versatile to strip down to small or build up, and it can be comfortable as either...I certainly need a better RF-EF with ND adapter. Feels too cheap for serious cinema glass.
The built in mic is actually a great reference monitor. Great. Couldn't believe how well it handle my wife's voice in the bg while I was dorking around.
Autofocus is no Canon, but I never trust it anyway. I'd love to try it out on a slider or dolly moving in Z-axis and see how it incrementally handles that. Bizarrely AF felt a hair slower than the Komodo's, but again, I never use it...So these tests have zero 'constants'.
On/Off switch, media door, AC plug all feel more robust than Komodo.
CF Cards feel less fragile than the Angelbird's I use on the Komodo. Not as much flex. But nothing beats the Red Mags. They were bulletproof. Like old HVX P2 cards.
Since I don't have a monitor yet, I delved into Red Tools more than I had with the Komodos. This tool alone might make me retire my DSMC2 entirely. It's fantastic.
Again, when you turn off the camera while plugged into AC it immediately starts charging the battery. Simply brilliant. This will singlehandedly not make me annoyed by lunch on set.
Cannot wait to get this thing outta the office and into the field.
