i want to know how important is to upgrade my ram memory on my mac pro??? i am going to use for RCX with the red rocket.....to convert to quicktime pro res...and a really dont know how much ram i need for it...???

thanks!!!

A Lot.

Seriously the number I see most commonly here is 24GB.

I still have a stock 6GB in my Mac Pro. That works, because I am working with DVCPRO HD, ProRes and uncompressed footage in 1080p, but even so I have to shut down apps and basically single task all the time.

Occasionally I have to restart the computer - especially if my favorite memory hog, Safari, has been running for a while.

You can get 24GB as an Upgrade for the Mac Pro from OWC for about $248, mine is on its way ...

I have a 3GHz Quad Core with 8GB and transcoding to PRORES 4444 is realtime, and I've never had a hiccup in the program.. Also, it's $248 per 8 gigs at OWC..

RCX works without a hitch as well..

Best bet is buy what you need when you need it.. Get the RED Rocket first, then see how it works in your setup.. If you NEED something faster, get it when you NEED it..

Good luck..

thanks guys!!!!damn they got a kit with 96GB of RAM...LOL

If you have a RED ROCKET, I don't care how much memory you have it's not going to speed up your transcoding.. If you are trying to run 300 apps at the same time while playing some videos games and watching porn at the same time, then you might want some more memory.. Also with the RED ROCKET you can watch FULL RES in realtime, don't forget that..

Unless I have a huge reading comprehension problem, OWC is selling 6 4GB 1333MHz modules as a 24GB kit for $247.99 at the link I shared above.

A single 8GB module from them is $146.99

Did you actually look at the link?

I agree with this advice, and a Rocket is the best R3D solution right now.

That said an 8 Core Mac Pro, with Resolve Lite and at least one CUDA card is pretty damn fine, not quite real time, but close, and a heckuva lot cheaper than a Rocket.

I should add that monitoring 4K is an expensive proposition right now. I don't consider that a valid argument for a Red Rocket in most situations.
