Shot this earlier today.. trying to figure out what's going on here..

Check out the weird banding going on. This banding exists on my pro-res files.

The bottom clip is blue, the original output, I added a slight levels curve towards the end. The clip on top has a hue shift applied, making it orange. Orange clip fades into blue clip. The banding occurs during the fades.

Originally shot in 4k 2:1, brought into the latest version of RedAlert. Slight S curve applied, white balanced, sent out on a Render with Pro-Res HQ, Full Debayer, Full Resolution QT file. That QT file was resized and cut in FCP.

I have a few thoughts and questions about this.

1. IN Sequence settings what are your render settings (is it render 10 YUV?)

2. Try rendering this with REDCODE codec to duplicate the problem.

3. Try the 3 way CC (cleaner in my opnion) than the two way CC.

4. If you have access to a MAC try to export the same clip with RED ALERT and see if that duplicates the problem.

5. One light the clips twice (one red one blue) and then export and do the dissolve in FCP.

This might begin to help you isolate the problem.

A: 8 bit YUV

2. Try rendering this with REDCODE codec to duplicate the problem.
A: Rendered with Redcode Codec @ 10 bit YUV, a lot cleaner, although banding still occurs at the end when I'm crushing the blacks.. http://www.theredshooter.com/rain/rain_redcode.mov

3. Try the 3 way CC (cleaner in my opnion) than the two way CC.
A: Agreed - much cleaner

4. If you have access to a MAC try to export the same clip with RED ALERT and see if that duplicates the problem.
A: I think you meant to say WIN. And I don't have access. I'll try to upload the 480MB file to Redrelay later tonight.

5. One light the clips twice (one red one blue) and then export and do the dissolve in FCP.
A: I just did the CC, with the cross dissolve and then output to h.264 direct.

Thanks David

#1 is likely your problem. In RedAlert, the 16bit data from the debayer and matrix/lut goes into the frame encoding at 16bit and comes out 10bit in prores.

In FCP, the sequence settings need to be set to a high precision mode.

Deanan,

Is there another codec that you are using with FCP that is 'stronger' than Pro-Res?

Does Scratch recognize the entire 16bits of data?

We use ProRes the most around here because it's a good balance of quality and speed. The only thing better seems to be uncompressed.

So Richard, do you have a press pass. Because when I went to the Observatory they shut me down kind of quick asking if I had one. It was because I had my tripod out...what a joke. I hate it when people do stuff like that. "Well if you have a permit for that camera and that tripod and another permit for shooting 4K, then yeah you can shoot here."

BTW the footage looked good.

Thanks Drew

Actually when I was driving up there earlier today, I was thinking of your encounter.. I didn't capture that shot at the observatory. I was at that bend in the road, in between the tunnel & the observatory. The last time I was at the observatory shooting, I didn't have a tripod so nobody bothered me. It's pretty ridiculous that the bigger the camera, the more hassle you have to deal with.. I can see if you came with a crew, but if its a one man shoot w/ a tripod, you should be left alone..

Yeah, if I was blocking a path or telling people not to walk in front of my camera then I could see them saying something to me. But I wasn't. I've been looking it up and it doesn't seem to be very hard at all to get a press pass.

Who told you to stop exactly?

I have never seen security up there.. Only COPS & Park Rangers, everytime I've shot something with the HVX, I've never had problems

That banding kills me
have you figured out what your problem is yet?
Id like to know in case i run into the same issue.
I wonder if its an 8bit thing because FCP only does 8bit i think.

It was people that worked inside the Observatory. They were bored and decided to come over at give me shit. The park rangers didn't care what I was carrying around or shooting with up there. I'm going to try and make it up there tomorrow to get some shots because the air should be somewhat clear. Maybe I should bring my mic with me just incase these guys try and do this again. There aren't any signs up there saying anything and I know they wouldn't say anything to some guy shooting a picture up there with some sticks. People with too much time on their hands are always a problem.

I might go back there tomorrow too.. Their heads will explode if they see 2 reds..

red rain

Richard, have you found settings that get rid of the banding completely? Is it visible in the RAW files or only in the processed/encoded files?
