  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey guys,

Hoping to get a little help. Looking for some recommendations for a RAID solution.

-24TB(ish)
-6-8 Bays
-$2500 budget

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks guys
 
 
What interface or how do you wish to connect to it? Which OS are you running?

Based on your capacity and budget, the Promise Pegasus line or the Areca ThunderRAID are probably your best options. And they both come in Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt 3 configurations, depending on how you need to connect. If you need to connect via USB 3.1 or 10GE, then there are other options out there.
 
Right now I'm runing of my 2015 Imac High Sierra but will be upgrading to either new Imac pro or Mac pro (depending what specs and price are when Mac Pro comes out). So probably will be running off of Thunderbolt 3 but 2 is good as well.
 
 
Alrighty then. Yeah, Thunderbolt 2 is probably your best option as you won’t be able to connect a Thunderbolt 3 RAID to your current iMac. Technically you should be able to with the right converter, but no one makes such a thing. The TB3 -> TB2 adapters like the one from Apple only work to attach a TB2 device to the TB3 port on the newer systems. They work great, unfortunately they don’t go the other way (TB3 device on TB2 host). Both the Promise and the Areca units are good. You should also look at the QNAP Thunderbolt options too, they have some with both TB2 ports and 10GE ports on the same unit. 4 bays or up to 12 bays, options for SSD cache and other features.

Pros: ~ $1,800 for 40Tb

Cons: Apple Software Raid is best bet, over Softraid. A hardware raid solution would be preferred but this is still an impressive case.

p.s. The Apple TB3 to TB2 adapter does work in the reverse direction, but you need TB3 computer for the video solution I describe. Jeff: I have connected my TB3 Raid to a TB1 MacBook Air using the apple adapter.

Thanks guys, I ended up ordering the G-Tech 24TB. It was $900 less then the Promise and seems like a good unit. Will keep you posted as to it's quality. Thanks for all the help
 
I love the Areca ThunderRAID, i also have a 19tb thunderbolt 2 for sale if your interested. I used it for less than a year and it works flawless.
