  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raid 1 for on-set data

I'm thinking of this way:

2 separate external RAID 1+0 enclosures. 4 bays each.

Shoot\offload cards to the first one and clone it on the second, every couple of hours.

This way you get:

- 4x security.
- 2x speed.

Practically 4 copies of the footage.

Once the shooting day\period is over, the second one goes for double LTO archiving of everything.

The first one goes to the studio, where it's dumped to another, larger workstation RAID for post, then it goes back for shooting new footage.

One of our primary motivations in creating the SolidStore (which I swear is still making progress, I will have an update soon) was to simplify the process of making dual copies of data on the stand-alone drives.

Our plan from the outset has steered well clear of RAID 1 simply because the drives can't be seen as two copies of that data. They can't (usually) be handled separately and can be really frustrating in situations where the original RAID controller is unavailable for some reason and a compatible one can't be found.

We aim to produce two copies of the data in a stand-alone form where each drive can be used and handled sepatately. Which is what I believe the aim of on-set backup should be.

Your #1 Alpha unit tester is at your service!

I think my #1 Alpha unit ought to be a little closer... I'm not sure my current spot-welded folded steel prototype box will stand up to the shipping :)

Maybe #2 Beta? Should I give prototype units cute names?

You must. It's part of fun. They should all be name of characters that "saved things" -
