I am on a MacPro Desktop, running 10.7.5., 32 GB RAM.
NVidia Quadro 4000 for Mac video card.
I have a working RED Rocket Card installed in the system as well.
The RED Rocket is supposedly enabled in AE as well, via the Interprate footage box. It is set to ALL AVAILABLE.

I have a comp sized 1920x1080 in AE, with mixed footage. A combination of Quicktimes and 4K R3D footage.
The whole comp is only 4 minutes in length total.

When all of the layers are visible, each time I click on the comp and attempt to move the cursor, I get the dreaded beach ball, then after avout 30 seconds or so, the cursor lands where i had put it. I am not able to actualy scrub through the comp. Sometime the system forgets that I actually completed the upward click motion and still thinks the mouse is clicked down and is dragging the cursor all over the place.

When I turn off the layers that contain the RED footage, then I am able to freely and quickly, with no beach ball or hesitation, move around the comp.

So this tells me that the problem rests with the RED footage. To double confirm, I turn back on the RED layers, and w're back to getting the beach ball for literally, each and every click I make on the comp.

All of the footage is located in an internal hard drive in the mac tower, so there is no issue with firewire or esata, etc... It's all internal.

I have tried everything that I can do to get this working right, but I am not able to.
I had installed the new RED Color 3 codecs, and then even tried reverting back to the RED Color 2 codecs, and I still get the same results as far as the issues above.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Any help or advise, or better yet, a solution, would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Joe

you are using the half rez option in the comp window right?

even so 30 seconds seems an awfully long refresh time...

can you try a test just dropping some red footage in a comp without the quicktimes and see how responsive that is...

I had situations in premiere where I had mixed quicktime with other formats and had so many bugs I had to rewrap all the .mov's to .avi....
not saying this is the case....but I have seen it before where mov's can screw with things in the timeline

and also as with all things adobe...try opening a fresh project, and reimport your existing project into it.....
I am working on some effect heavy videos right now, and have to do this every 2 or 3 days because of crashes/issues.....it solves a lot of problems

Yes, I'd lower the REZ in the comp window. What's the actual resolution of the R3D files? If you're just scaling them down to fit the 1080p comp, then AE not only has to try and play back the R3D files, but it also has to scale them. I'd try working in 1/4 rez and see what that does for you...

I tried a fresh project with no QT's, just R3D's, and it still lags on each click of the mouse.

I also tried importing the project into a fresh project, but that had no affect.

I also tried working in 1/4 rez, and that had no affect. The problem with working in 1/4 rez is that I have a lot of tracking and roto to do, so 1/4 rez wont work for that.

This really has me baffled. I uzrez'd a full 90 min feature shot in RED and it worked perfectly, never had any of these issues.

The RED footage is 4K, and 2K, and the comp size is 1920x1080.

And now a new problem has surfaced. Now the ISO of the RED footage is up to 1600, when it was shot at 320, and I ensured that the interpretation stayed the same.
It was not like this yesterday, now this is crazy.....

We have 2 machines with the exact same specs.
You likely have already done this, but in case not, it's worth mentioning.
And it sounds like the problem.

Have you installed the Adobe Labs Red Epic Importer in After Effects?
Here's the link for the download if not:
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/redepic_importer/

It's not an installer, so much as it is just replacing files in the App Conents folder.
There are instructions on the page.

Yeah, I had already tried using the new RED Epic Importer, but that didn't work either. I even re-installed the previous version to see if that would fix it and maybe it was a bug with the new version, but that didn't work either.

Interesting enough though, I even opened up the project in AE CS5.5, and ended up with the same results I have been getting with the CS6 project.

i didnt see in your post Joe...

are you on CS6?

not sure what to say....if you had epic footage on cs5 or using 5khd, I could see it being an issue, but 4k HD on cs6 should be no problem....I am keying some 5k right now on my laptop

the only thing I can see is possible plugin issues....even though you may have addressed them already.
You could try setting the rocket to 'none' and see how it goes.....you might be suprised
