Hi gang,

Here is a little video we put together on a recent workflow we put in place with our RED Scarlet footage. We have been trying a bunch of different workflows from end to end and so far this looks like the easiest and the best at preserving image quality.

Let me know what you guys are doing with your scarlet footage.

Thanks for the tutorial! Nice ad and concept for the team.

Why did you choose DPX from Resolve?

Had you considered EXR?

I know Premiere is not color managed like AE, and I'm unclear about Resolve.

I'm curious if you ever considered trying to implement a linear workflow after editing in Premiere - or if that's even possible with Resolve?

How responsive is Resolve? Did it take full advantage of CUDA on your gtx470?

I'm guessing you had the full version as you were using 3K?

How does it work with 4K in terms of speed?

Thanks!

I chose DPX simply because that is what I am use to and have worked with before. I haven't had the best of luck with EXR on my own tests.

Resolve is responsive enough to grade on but I wouldn't do any client in the room work on our PC system. If someone is paying you to color their spot/film then you need to be able to achieve realtime playback. If I am coloring on our stuff I know the capabilities of the program and what it will look like in the end. Outside Directors and DPs want real time. If you want realtime in Resolve for 4k you are going to need a Red Rocket and multiple GPUs.

Right now I am getting anywhere from 9-15 fps playback.

I dont have the full version in our place. Just running light at the moment as we decide which way to move after NAB.

Patrick,

Thanks for posting. Do you think you might switch out of Resolve if Speedgrade offers R3D support?

Adam

I have no reason to doubt Blackmagic is going to have something big in store for all of us at NAB. They have crushed it the last few years.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for a mid range board or support of the Element. That will win me over.

But you never know with Adobe. Could be a great worklfow if they go big with Speedgrade but it would have to be a pretty big overhaul of the whole software.

DaVinci is such a breeze to use.

One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that I can't for the life of me get the Source monitor to work in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Tried a whole bunch of different things but nothing works.

I end up just dragging everything down in one sequence and then flipping back and forth. Kind of a pain but I haven't found a cure for it yet.

Question: How do you get the XML import to readjust the size of your clips correctly in Davinci if you reframe in Premiere? I tried some of the tic boxes, but nothing so far.

Andrew,
We only adjust size in DaVinci. We edit with any size adjustments in mind and make notes but we only adjust size in DaVinci.

Maybe someone else can chime in who actually get files from other editors.

Really enjoyed your blog on using DaVinci!

Samundra video was very good!

Thanks Les.

We've got two more spots coming out this week. Jobs that we got from people finding out we had switched to RED. It has been a great conversation piece with others in the Perth industry.

Pretty cool stuff.

Being the first to own a hot new car or camera gets a lot of attention!

I look forward to seeing your new spots!

I watched a demo from BlackMagic today, and it was claiming real time R3Ds without a Rocket, but ... that must have been with a lot of GPUs?

I'm curious about how to deal with green screen chroma keying in the Resolve workflow? I would prefer to deal with this before grading?

And I suppose any plug-ins would have to be used in the 'After Effects' last stage of the pipeline?

I use NeatVideo often and sometimes digitalanarchy.com's Beauty box - that I'd prefer to use before grading also.

Is there any talk of Resolve using any plug-ins? Maybe OpenFX?

Good to know, thanks! Thought it would just be easier that way, since you can actually see if you're going over 100% scale, frame guides, ect. But the UI in Resolve is not the easiest I've ever played with, that award goes to Magic Bullet... albeit, with less power and control, but you can still play with the 4k R3D files. Without leaving Premiere or AE. Something to note, if output speed is your number one concern.

If there is any green screen we do it in After Effects before grading. We just render those files with a balanced REdlog Film DPX sequnce and grade from there.
