R3D to Targa Sequence?? Why?

Folks,

We have a TV spot we shot with our new Scarlet. The 60 sec. spot is finished in Premiere, with a little polishing in Davinci. The client has asked for the spot to be delivered as a Targa sequence, with separate music, VO and sfx tracks.

I'm curious if anyone has had this request before, and what possible advantage there would be to exporting a finished spot as a Targa sequence. There is no further post to be done on the spot..

Anyone have any ideas?

Not a big deal. Targas are fine. Lossless Format. If that's what they want give it to them. An older company could have built a workflow tool around them - it is very much simpler than tiffs or anything else.

Granted, they're lossless, but arent they huge files per frame? Seem to remember them being massive back in my Sculpt 3D days. I shudder at the thought of archiving then sending over the internet 1,440 frames of targas. But maybe I'm wrong.

Do a quick test for filesize, I'm not sure. That's not that many files. At 4k or 2k? Probably won't be more than a few gigs...

Targa is only 8-bit per channel, so not really optimal, especially since they most likely will still need to convert to something else for actual delivery. You might want to inquire if they'd prefer (or if they can handle) a TIFF or DPX sequence.

I've had to deliver Targas for spots destined for China in the past. Really isn't an issue, sure it's only 8 bit but the spot likely isn't being graded any further, just prepped for encoding and sucked into the stations media servers, which are more than likely 8 bit. Of course, we were also delivering SD targa sequences. If it's a spot I imagine you will be delivering in either HD or SD, unless it's destined for cinema use as well.

Throwing uncompressed files into a heavily compressed zip file can work wonders for delivery over the web I have found. Especially for TIFF and DPX sequences I have sent in the past. Should ring true for Targa too

Big time savings! Don't bother with MP4 or other compressed formats. Targa is something I haven't seen a while but I get an odd request every so often from animation guys. I think the CG crowd used to be big on them. The other posters are right though, TIFF or DPX would yield a higher quality picture in 16BIT.

But if the spot is graded and will be aired in 8 bit (which it probably will) the tga's are just fine...
