R3D stills to Lightroom

Does anyone know how to get RAW R3D stills into Lightroom? I don't want to convert to TIFF or PSD. Is there a workflow or converter that can get the RAW data from Redcine to LR?
 
My version of Lightroom is one release old, but it will import R3D frames just like any other still media. BUT, it interprets the R3D frame as a video clip and doesn't allow use of the vast majority of the coloring tools available in the application.

Not sure if this is still true in the current version of LR.
 
The newest version does the same. It imports R3D (trimmed or full) as a video, but then does not allow any manipulation. I'd love to convert R3D stills to .NEF or .DNG if possible.
 
A little off topic, but for some time I have been trying to find a way to convert r3d videos into cDNG sequences. Anybody know how to do this?

This sounds like it needs to be an adobe feature request. Going from R3D to DNG would be a good thing. In this sort of situation, I use DPX sequences. They carry time code, so they work really for most of what I do. I've been meaning to explore EXR files for some time, but have not yet gotten to doing that.

I've been screaming about this for like two years now. Adobe and RED need to get together and figure it out. There isn't any reason I should be carting around 100MB tiffs if a 3MB r3d can do the same thing, and you know actually be raw data. If PS can open them I don't understand why LR won't.
 
What I've found most recently is:

Yes Photoshop "supports" R3D single frames but upon import it is still only using a popup window with IPP2 adjustments, then saves the file to a PSD which becomes the several hundred MB file (depending on what camera / frame size you are using) that everyone is complaining about. So in practice it is no different than using RCX to make basic color adjustments and then saving out a TIFF. I guess the only advantage would be that you are instantly in a PSD file. But in terms of quality, that's like a TIFF anyway, which is also huge.

So if your goal is to do deep color work on an R3D still with Adobe products like PS or LR then the huge files seem to still be the burden. And if your workflow for keeping track of all your photos or stills is Adobe, then that's the way the cookie....

Importing the R3D still into Davinci Resolve might be the way to keep file sizes down and have the best tools for manipulating an R3D RAW still frame.

If anyone has more info, corrections or a better way...please inform.
 
I love r3d files, but our network setup isn't conducive to utilizing RedCineX to it's fullest potential. I like the Resolve idea, and am currently exploring the effectiveness of that solution, since editing video in resolve works extremely well over our network.

I also downloaded Capture One this week to try, and contacted Phase One to see if they will consider supporting .r3d stills. Their color manipulating tools are amazing.

(on a side note, I also asked them to support Hasselblad/Pentax files, since PhaseOne started their company making replacement backs for Hasselblad and Pentax cameras, and they are now making drone cameras in conjunction with DJI.. and DJI is a parent company of Hasselblad.... I highly suspect they won't comply to that request though, since they have the super exclusionary policy of not supporting other medium format camera makers in their software.)
