R3D Metadata Question

Hi there,

I have a question regarding metadata on R3D files. Basically, I work at a studio that handles a lot of still and video files, and when we ingest any still images, we append the metadata (in Adobe bridge) to include our copyright information, and simple keywords like genre, location, client, etc.

Then when the raw (CR2) files are exported into JPGs or anything else, the metadata is propagated down the line so every version of the image has the proper copyright info and keywords attached. Internally, we use these keywords to search for appropriate images to send to prospective clients, and we most often do this using the finder/spotlight.

So my question is basically this; Is there any way to edit the metadata of an R3D file so the information is inherited by all exports of the footage? It seems like with R3Ds, the metadata is actually stored in the partnering RMD file, which is then only recognized by RCX or a very short list of programs, like Premiere, and then nothing is passed down to any transcodes. Is there any way I can edit the metadata so it's recognized by programs as primitive as Finder, and so it will be inherited by any transcodes or exports I make?

Thank you for your help,
Keith

Hi Keith,

How metadata is passed during the transcoding process is really dependent on the application. The R3D itself contains a large amount of read only metadata. The RMD is a much restricted subset of editable metadata, like user adjusted looks and framing along with some user fields accessible through REDCINE-X. We have no control over which parts third parties choose to read and write.

In REDCINE-X we do offer the ability to embed XMP in both TIFF and JPEG exports. OpenEXR has it's own format for metadata which we use.

Also included with the REDCINE-X package is a Spotlight plugin which exposes R3D metadata to Finder. You should be able to search your footage in Finder using various keywords. After that though -- again it is dependent on what the application you use for transcoding supports.

Hope this helps,
David
