  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

R3d-mania!!!

In the parking lot I shot Jarred's Porsche with some wooden pallets in the BG, then some skin tones thanks to Travis and Brent. Also shot straight at the sun and at the sun's reflection on the back window of the car. Some high contrast stuff in there for sure.

Unfortunately I think I overexposed a lot of it by a bit. I should have closed down the iris even more but there should be some decent examples of ~f/16. I really wish I had some high quality NDs really.

I wasn't handling the weight of the camera well, plus the heat and little sleep... Note to self: Must work out.

Mostly with the 25mm and 35mm, but I think I also shot a bit with the 50mm.

I didn't shoot much with the 85mm and 100mm cause they simply blow your mind any way you cut it. Jarred keeps posting some gorgeous imagery with the 100mm which was my favorite. So I thought it might be a bit more informative to concentrate on the wide end.

I also shot some skin tones indoors wide open with the 25mm. And I pushed in close because I am concerned with how it might be to work in tight spaces.

I might be able to post some of it later tonight.

Thanx for sharing those clips! They look great ya lucky &%$#!!
Looking forward to seeing more of the outdoor stuff for sure.

Nice stuff! The lenses are really great, so smooth! Unfortunately, current funds restrict me to still lenses, but it's nice to know that I could build a set with little financial hassle later on. I'd realistically only need the 35, 50, and 85 for most situations.

Hi Roberto,

Which tool and settings were used to convert from raw to QT ?

REDCINE, REdAlert, Clipfinder, FCP L&T, After Effects ?
Sharpening or OLFP compensation ?
Which scaler ? Lanczos, Catmull, Sinc ?

Thanks very much for the report.

Antoine

I really want to see these 'anti' lens flares you speak of. I personally really enjoy it when a lens flares out. Kinda disappointing that the RPPs are that awesome, yet they don't flare..

Jarred, any flare footage?

thanks for sharing RL they look really sharp!!!

We drove around all day yesterday and about to go do the same again. I'll probably put up the rest of the stuff early in the week.

I see you used Vegas 9, and you mentioned the clips are ungraded. Your colors look fine, can you tell me exactly what settings you used? In my very brief experiments so far, I'm getting odd colors out of Vegas 9 with too much purple and yellow, almost as if there was a color-space problem.

...also, it looks like you have only 12 fps on the 25_Dolly.mp4 file, I assume that was just an encoding glitch? (oh, seems like they are all 12 fps... I didn't even notice on the rack-focus shots since so little changes between each frame).

I cut in 8-bit mode and finish in 32-bit float, but I didn't touch these. The issue isn't with processing but with the way Vegas displays the colors, not 100% but I am pretty sure.

I fixed the Dolly, thanks for pointing it out.

Yes, but if you want to minimize flares you might not get better than this. For flares you could rent a Super Speed for a day or two and save a ton of money. Just a thought. I found the two instances where I see the flares, I'll put it up as soon as I can.

They give some really beautiful sunstars with tons of points!

I uploaded a flare / high contrast / sunstar clip... again I am very sorry about the overexposure... and on top of that the clip was not WB'ed so I approximated it by eye on my consumer LCD... Also raised contrast by 40% so it should exaggerate the flares quite a bit.

I'll upload better stuff in the coming days.

He's got a custom truck and another RED ONE body painted in the exact same finish. It does look great and more importantly - it makes is unique... :)

I am glad You got to check out the RPP's first hand, hopefully we will shoot Your feature on them! I have had them the last two days and been shooting some comparison tests. Uploading the R3D's now. You can see more in the "Lens Tests" section...

:) Peter

Yes, that is some beautiful stuff Peter! I wish I was there, and pick your brains, use the MB, etc. Looks like you guys had a blast!

Maybe I should ask to move this thread over to the Lens Test section... I guess I am self conscious of what I was able to do so I tried to hide it a bit. :)

Uploaded a little video. I was messing around in Vegas with all the stuff I shot in the sun plus a few shots done indoors with the 25mm.

I forgot to say that the last shots in the last video I uploaded are on the 25mm wide open.

I placed the camera at about 3 feet from him and then moved in to about 1 foot from Travis. I think the wider one was with the camera at about 5-6 feet from him. The wall in the background was at about 6-8 feet behind him.

Roberto, great stuff here!! Thanks for posting it, makes me want my RPPs yesterday

Btw, sorry for not calling you back, weekend was slammed, can call tonight.

Nice going Roberto! The 85mm just knocks me out!
