  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

R3D FCPX support?

So far as Shake is concerned, that is exactly what happened.

I remember it a bit differently. Apple bought Nothing Real (Shake owners) and at the time, there was a support contract business model. Apple had no interest or even ability in continuing this, but recognized that if you paid thousands for a piece of software, you rightfully would expect some things in return. They terminated the support contracts, EOL'ed non-Mac versions and dropped the price. When it was finally EOL'ed at the $500 price point, Apple publicly announced that a next-gen replacement would be coming within a year. This never happened and the developers (either before or after) went on to work on Nuke.

Go ask the guys who sold Shake, Silcon Color and (I forget who they bought that core tech from) if they would have survived on their professional user base. Those companies positioned themselves to be purchased by a company like Apple.

I think that may be true for Silicon Color, but probably not for Shake (Nothing Real). Final Touch's technology (Silicon Color) was developed in-house. I don't think they bought any core technology. It was basically a developer underwritten by an investor who was his neighbor, IIRC. In any case, hard to tell what anyone's actual intentions are or were.

I have imported 5K files from an Epic (Pro Res converted with RCX) and these are resized to 4K on the timeline using the spacial conform control. This gives you a Fit/Fill/None toggle. Fit or Fill means you match the height or width and the image is scaled or cropped accordingly. None would mean a crop.

Cheers, and thanks for the heads up with that Oliver :)

I'm not sure that your assertion is at odds with what David and I were saying. By disagreeing are you saying that the poll never happened and Apple didn't absorb Optical Flow and other Shake tech into their existing products?

It's inevitable the FCPX will have R3d support. I mean, the are argument that Apple isn't supporting pro users, yet they showcase Alexia footage in their software video. Why not a HDV camera? But the catch is everyone will have to wait. And it's true that Apple have been more fickle about their pro-product support in recent years, dropping products like a spoilt child loses interest with a toy. Unlike consumers, professional users like stability and long term commitment, they like to know where things are going. That's more our problem than theirs (because I'm not the one with 75billion dollars in the bank).
Bottom line is that I've gotten quite used to the way RED openly communicate with their users. In contrast, Apple don't, and as a RED user, I am more frustrated with this than other Apple customers might be.

Because they want people to think it's professional regardless of the reality, and Alexa shoots straight to ProRes, Apple's own format which is easier to use in FCP X than HDV?

See if they'd actually done something that would've taken some effort like Red footage then we could talk.

I wasn't necessarily disagreeing. I didn't mean to imply that. Just a slightly different take. No, I don't know about the poll so I'm not contradicting that and yes, I do agree that technology was rolled into other products.

I think it's simply a matter of cross-promotion using a company that has a partnership arrangement.

If you look at Aperture, when it first hit the streets it didn't have RAW support for all the DSLRs on the market and some of the RAW support they did have was second rate. But over a short period of time the additional RAW support was added and improved upon. In fact, Aperture has been vastly improved since version 1, so much so that I barely use Photoshop anymore.

FCPX already does 90% of what 99% of users require straight from day 1 and although it's a bit buggy and a touch annoying I reckon my cat could edit and polish a glossy looking movie using it and share part of the workflow with my dog (a really great sound engineer) on our home network. Certainly, I don't think it will be long before additional features are added, like R3D support and OMF.
