We are proud to announce the newest version of R3D Data Manager, which includes the Quicktime Batch Renders module.

Updates in this release:

  • Quicktime Batch Render We have released the Quicktime Batch Render module for R3D Data Manager. With this powerful tool, you can create native quicktime files for dailies, editing and finishing, right from R3D Data Manager. Some features include:
    • Batch Rendering: Select a folder of R3D files (or more correctly, a RDM folder) and render all the files therein, in one batch process.
    • Metadata Save options: Save all the metadata from each R3D file in your batch, to a text file, csv file or PDF file.
    • Copy of renders: Once rendered, copy the rendered files to up to 4 destinations, at once. This saves you time distributing your rendered files to all the correct places
    • Assign looks: You can assign a "default look" by selecting a RSX file to use for all the renders. Or you can color-correct each file, and R3D Data Manager will look for the RSX in the RDC folder and use that specific look.
    • In/Out Points: Assign In and Out points in the RSX file, and R3D Data Manager will render the R3D files in accordance to those In/Out points. No need to render data you wont need!
    • Supports 5k & 4k HD: Supports the upcoming 5k and 4k HD recording formats. (5k based on current Epic speculation, subject to change)
    • Frame Masking: R3D Data Manager will exactly letterbox your material to what you were framing for, and then best-fit that inside your output format.
    • Output Formats: Supports standard HD formats (1080 & 720) and PAL and NTSC.
    • Output Codecs: Render to any major Quicktime codec supported by Red. Please note, you must have that codec installed on your system to render to.
    • Timecode Windows: Enable a window burn of timecode information in a variety of sizes and colors.
    • Processor limit: Limit the processing to the number of cores you wish to use. (experimental)
  • Help Menu Updates: We've updated the help menu to support the new Quicktime Batch Render module.

In addition, we are taking reservations for the Windows version of R3D Data Manager. We have a special price right now for current R3D Data Manager license holders for a discount above the posted website price. For new orders, we are running a pre-release special: place your order now and get special advance price. Order both the Mac and Windows versions and receive a combo discount. All the details are on our order page.

IF UPGRADING FROM 2.x: You will need a new key before using this product. Make sure to have one sent to you by entering your information here

It would be great if one could assign single RSX's to multiple clips in the batch. Not just one for all, like in RR. If you can make that happen, I'll buy it immediately, since it would free me from babysitting the computer at night…
Some shuffling of priorities in the batch list by drag-n-drop would be nice too.

DPX support in future ?

On top of the RSX request above, can DPXs be added as an output format ?

Well, you could do that right now, just not in the way you are thinking of.

Make a default RSX file, and make a special RSX file. Set one as the default. Then just copy/paste the other RSX file into the RDC folders where you want the special look. Our software just looks for the first RSX file in the folder, it doesnt need to be the one that matches the R3D file name.

A bit of work, but you could do it right now.

Have you gotten any render time comparisons between R3D and RR? How does it holdup? R3D is slowly but surely becoming the swiss army knife of the Red post world. Awesome stuff Conrad.

It can work over multiple nodes through qmaster and redline too right? That's the reason for the 32 processors?

Yes, but that's not perfect. We are usually working in ProRes. So, not to loose dynamic range going from 12 to 10 bit, we'd need a first light correction for most clips. Since this correction would be the same for one lighting situation or even location in most cases, it would be great to assign a 'master' RSX to any such group.

I'll buy it anyway!

do i need any additional software installed on the computer where r3d data manager is installed - to be capable to use all options included in new version?

or i can use it just as standalone program WITHOUT any other programs - i.e. red cine, red alert, redline etc.
just, say different codecs and QT itself?

filip

Anyone tested the render functions yet? I've been having a few probs with rendering out files more than once.

I can't get individual RDC folders to render the R3d's from Data Manager. If i send the entire RDM folder to Data Manager it begins transcoding to QT but it seems quite slow. I'm exporting anamorphic material from 4k at half debayer to 720p ProResHQ with an RSX assigned for all clips in that folder. 4 processors hitting it and its taking quite a bit longer than RR. I really like the anamorphic setting though. That seems to work well.

Well, some of the codecs are only installed with FCP, so you will need that. You may want the avid codec, so thats separate. Or you could just not use any of the prores, dvcprohd or DNxHD codecs. And you'll need a copy of red alert installed.

Thanks.

Please contact us directly with what you are trying to do. I have been rendering thousands of times (literally) with the same set of files, no issues.

Thanks.

It should be about the same as RR, if not a bit better. When comparing to RR, make sure you have identical settings, as thats a big factor.

Right now, to do an individual RDC, you will need to separate it and set the source as the directory above it. Its designed to do whole batches (ie. a RDM).

Thanks.

I'll speed test the two with same settings and report back.
Does the Anamorphic setting desqueeze the image? It didn't desqueeze a test i did earlier shot in 4k ana mode (16:9 with guides) with Lomo anamorphic lenses. I selected the Anamorphic setting and set it to 2.4:0 with cropping on. The result was still squeezed with the crop. Is it supposed to do the desqueeze?

We discovered an issue where the Quicktime Batch Render was not setting the debayer render resolution properly. Consequently it was always doing a full quality debayer, not a half quality or other settings. This lead to the program being slower than RedRushes with the same settings.

We have fixed that, and it works properly. In fact, we now beat out RedRushes in a time test, as noted below:

This was done on a MacBook Pro, 2.33Ghz, 2Gb, and we were processing 2k files for ProResHQ 1080. You'll notice that we are a little more specific in the GUI now also, with "Camera/RSX default" now being the default for most Rendering options.

So we have a couple of other things to code up and we should have a new version out soon.

Thanks.
