Because I'm interested in a Scarlet I did some tests with friends Epic M, to get a feel for the handling.
We then copied some files from the SSD to a mac book pro and from there to a SD card for me to carry home.

At home I tried to import these files into Windows Premiere Pro CS5.0.3 (all current updates installed), but I'm getting the message "Unsupported format or damaged file".

These files open without any problems in RedCineX. So they can't be totatly corrupt

I also downloaded some r3d files from the demo real http://www.redcamcentral.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=926&sid=a66da20976f955f53221d3b8c9aed75c they work without any problem.
So it seems there is some kind of problem with the files from my test and not Premiere it self.

Any suggestions?

The mentioned Importer only works for CS 5.5. As i'm using CS5 this will not work.
Is there any other way to get Epic and probably Scarlet footage inside of CS5 ?

Unfortunately not. The EPIC plugin was a new feature for CS5.5 that isn't backwards compatibile. Sorry for the bad news!

Does anyone know what will be the requirement for the Scarlet?

Probably the same as for the Epic, i would guess.

That way i'd have to buy the upgrade even i wanted to wait till CS6 :o(

I am almost positive that the scarlet footage will be identical to Epic footage. Perhaps there may be some different metadata, but I would be very surprised if the underlying R3D was any different. My guess would be that if you want to work with Scarlet-X footage in Raw before CS6 comes out, then you're going to need to upgrade to CS5.5.

If the RAW workflow wasn't that much of a concern to you, you could export out ProRes or DnxHD files from RedCine-X and then edit with these in CS5.0? That might be able to tide you over until CS6 came out?

CS5 + 4k and 4.5k footage works great on my side.... on a mac. No need for the importer either.

Doesn't work with 5k footage though. I just run it through Redcine-X to ProRes and then import it to CS5.

Apart from 5K HDRx wouldn't work in CS 5 either.

Wow! So you mean that EPIC footage that is shot 4.5k and under works natively in CS5.0?

If so, that could be quite useful for people shooting to scarlet since most are going to be shooting 4k and under for motion. Any chance you could confirm?

We actually have to wait and see if its the same with scarlet footage. But it might work that way.
But not r3d audio in Premiere yet. So it isn't a perfect workflow yet.

Dear Mathias,

Can you give us details about your home computer, if it is a Mac or a PC?

Asking this because you say you made a transfer to an sd card on a mac, right?

and you are able to watch on redcine

Epic files downloaded to a mac and saved to a sd card.
The sd card went into a pc (win7, 64Bit, 16GB Ram, all current patches)

The files play in RedCine X on Win7 but it is impossible to import them into Win Premiere CS 5,
There is a special Epic importer addon which you can install for CS5.5. But saddly there is no such importer for CS5 and the 5.5 Version is not backward compatible.

Just ran into the same problem, and I can confirm after talking with Adobe techs, that EPIC footage will not open on anything older than CS5.5.2. I'm also having trouble getting Cine-X to install on my machine, so I may be in trouble! It's saying that MSVCP100.dll is missing (and I can't find it anywhere)... any ideas on that missing DLL?

Build 501 installed okay, and even after copying the dll file out of build 501 into build 506, it still gave me errors about the file not being right, or the program simply not opening... has anyone else gotten a corrupted copy of 506?

506 works on windows fine for me, but as far as i can see it does'nt give me a working option for CS5 and/or audio at all.
Might be nice for Mac users to export ProRes but as far as windows support goes this program needs much more export functions create a decent workflow.

I'm still searching for some smart workflow on win so i can convince my boss to buy a Scarlet instead of another product.

Workflow on Win with Premiere is fantastic, as long as you have a version of Premiere that supports the codec... RED ONE footage was flawless in Premiere 5.0.3 for me, and I expect that EPIC footage works well in 5.5 as well... just a matter of having the right software. In fact, the ability to handle it natively right out of the camera is one of the huge selling points for Premiere for me...

@davbeisner but you don't have r3d audio yet. Or did i miss something?
Adobe is working on it, but as far as my last information is there is still no audio.

I have no idea when it comes to possible changes with the EPIC stuff, but I know that with CS5.0 through 5.0.3, when importing RED files where we had shot audio directly to the camera, I had no issues with the audio... I don't know what the EPIC may be doing differently, and I don't know what 5.5 may have changed in the way it handles the codec, but with ONE footage in CS5 I had no problems at all with embedded audio...

Of course, I'm not a regular red user, either, so it's only a few shoots a year when I'm exposed to working with the footage, so there may be something entirely different with the audio now that I'm not aware of yet.
