  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

R3D compression in RCX

1. Yes. It's possible to check the compression in RC-X. It should be in the metadata tab.

2. No. To my knowledge, it's not possible to change the compression during a trim.

How would that even work? Once it is compressed to a certain level in the original footage, whatever was lost on the compression is lost forever. You can't go back and compress it less. OTOH, if you want it more compressed, you can transcode to another format.

The idea was not to reduce compression but to increase it, to spare some additional space in HD while retaining the R3D file format for future versatility.

After a project is finish, or simply when we realize that we don't need such a low compression ratio, it will be useful to be able tom make an R3D trim AND recompress the file further to save more disk space.

Transcoding to another more compressed format is not the same thing...

It is a lot easier (and probably cheaper when time is money) to buy some extra HD's, the current pricing is around € 30..40/TB for a descent 7200 rpm harddrive.
1 hour of the highest quality 8k 5:1 monstro footage is around 1 TB.

Let's say you could recompress that to 8k 10:1 you would only save € 15..20/hour of footage and loose quality.

It makes sense...
