  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

R1 to M-X upgrade announcement?

I guess if you upgrade your R1 to MX you can not trade it for Epic?
Orrrr?! Maybe trading in an UPGRADED R-1 allows you to jump ahead in the line for trading up to an Epic?

This plays very nicely into the idea of pre purchasing your EPIC sensor for use in your current R1....I'll wait for the EPIC body while using the MX in my R1......this would truly make... ...

Obsolecence obsolete.

I wouldn't be surprised if the upgrade went down in price, but I would be quite surprised if it went up. I mean, it wasn't that long ago when the upgrade was announced at $4500, and it may be starting as soon as later this month.

I mean, if they could honor their original $17,500 after all that time, it should be a piece of cake for them to honor (or even better) the M-X upgrade.

I'm definitely excited by this development. I would hate to upgrade in January only to find out that Epics are shipping in April, though.

Still, the new sensor does look terrific. I wonder how well it will cut with an M-X sensor from a Scarlet or Epic? I would love to be able to use an M-Xed One as my B camera, but if it LOOKS like a B-camera, then that obviously won't work. I generally just use two cameras in car shots and over the shoulders. But they'd definitely have to match.

ahhh, OK, I see your guys points here, ... well for Tattoo and Stage 2 folks like me, upgrading is a no brainer---

for stage 3... i have to say I seriously doubt the upgrade path will be an option... because its a waste of RED's time and resources (even if they do charge for it) to take it back in trade... and like steve p. said, a difficult expense to recoup possibly in such a short time.

All i know is that with an ASIC, when it is ready. they will be able to crank out 1000's of modules a month. as they predict 60 days b etween stage 2 and 3 according to oct 30 announcement.

so Steve P. yes, it looks like it will be a 4 to 6 month option... based on latest info...is it worth it to you?

Hi Tim,

I would of thought RED would rather take a camera as part exchange, that has had an upgraded sensor at the customers expense! Why would an upgraded camera disadvantage RED?

No matter when Epics come out, I'll do the upgrade first. Even if there was only one month interval. I just want to experience everything Red has to offer. My only worry is if I will be able to afford a 617

Must be nice to be rich, Nook.

:-)

Economics will clearly dictate my decisions. It was an incredible stretch for us to buy our two REDs, and when we finished shooting the first film, we sold one of them to help pay for post. How we're going to pay for an Epic, I have no idea. However, since I have never even seen a 4K image in person, and 2K looks plenty "good enough" for me, I suspect that Epic is probably a bit of overkill for us at the moment, anyway.

But I sure want lower noise. I hate noise!

I have a feeling that Epic will other many other advanatges, not just resolution. For example, newer, faster processors will mean better data-interpolation off the sensor, which can lead to better dynamic range and other benefits.

I think that all you will really get from the brain is the ability to record 5K instead of 4.5 and faster framerates in 5K and 2K.
