R1-MX vs Canon 7D @ 1000 ISO Quick & Dirty Side by Side Test:

The test shot with the same lens Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 and at the same aperture @ f/2.5.

Please, let me know what you think?

The example from R1-MX shot @ 4K HD, then resized and compressed to h264 @ 1080p in REDCINE-X B221.

M-X shot renders cleaner deeper into the shadows and also the color has more fidelity.

Sanjin, are you pleased with performance of the M-X sensor, particularly with your set of high speed lenses?

Michael,

I'm pretty satisfied with MX low light performance and also with fast lenses.

Actually you do not need more that F/2.0 or T/2.0 speed.

And this is one of my latest tests that use the same lens at two different cameras also showed very slightly the old Mysterium problem with OLPF and flares mirroring...or whatever it is.

Simply the same issue you can't see with 7D just because it doesn't have it.

Pretty noticeable difference even in the 1024x576 thumbnail of the compressed downrez. M-X goes much deeper into the shadows with far less noise. No surprise, really. An interesting test would be 7D still vs. M-X.

DOF big difference

DOF big difference

Hi Sanjin,

Thank you very much for your test. How do you explain the DOF difference between Red MX and eos7 ? The sensor are nearly the same isn't it ? Does the eos7 uses a portion of the sensor ?

Olivier

Why did you buy the eos7 and not the eos5 (bigger sensor)

I hope Epic and scarlett won't be too late, because I don't want to buy a canon but i often need these kinds of images and can not travel with the Red.

Olivier,

still don't have any clue about it, probably next time have to think more about FFD.

Stay tuned because tonight I'll do another same test with Leica Summicron R 35mm f/2.0 manual aperture lens on both cameras.

The depth of field should be the same, regardless of sensor size, as both are 50mm @ f/2.5. However, the 7D seems to have a wider field of view and the M-X has a tighter perspective which gives it more bokeh. At first glance, this suggests that more of 7D's sensor is being used. Or maybe the 7D is slightly further away, I can't really tell.

what picture style was used? because it looks much darker than the R-MX.. I think to have a better test we should match color/gamma etc.. also when the 7D's blacks are pulled like the R-MX, noise might appear more clearly..

Maybe its because the canon mount reduction. Lens may has different distance from the chip? Is that possible?

BTW: very nice test!

Thanks Jiriwolf,

soon I'll make another one with using another lens...

Stay tuned.

Interesting test. The difference is very noticable. The MX noise looks very fine and natural...
You should do the same comparison at 2000 ISO... The difference will probably be even more obvious than at 1000 ISO...

If the lens were a different distance from the chip, the image would be out of focus.

I can't tell for sure, but in the setup pics, it looks like the Canon's film plane is farther away from the subject than the R1.

Good test. Could you shoot the next few with the exact frame (i.e cup in the left in both frames, etc)?

To tell the truth, the 7D isn't that bad -- the main peeve I have with Canon is when the camera is moving or shooting fast moving targets.....:cryin:

Looking at the color chart on the 7D, it looks like the black lines between the bottom row of color chips are belled out at the bottom. Is this your chart, or something odd happening?
