R1/Epic trade-in via RED Europe?

Would be great if we Europeans could trade-in our R1s for EPIC-X via Pinewood. I think most of us fear the customs hell and it will be hard to explain the trade-in model to the customs officer.

In an ideal world, you are right. It SHOULDN'T be a problem.

In practise, however, it certainly is.
I am fortunate enough to be VAT registered, so it doesn't bother me when FedEx incorrectly charge me VAT on replacement parts. I just claim it all back from HMRC.

However, if I was not VAT registered, and couldn't claim it back, I would be seriously out of pocket by now!
Or else wasting days chasing them for the correct paperwork, etc.

It´s time to RED Europe get prime time.
European market/users will benefit a lot from it and of course RED also.
In taxes, in support, in workshops... you name it.
This industry moves lighting fast and we need in Europe a place to get our "thunders".

Can't imagine anybody buying a RED, already spent $20000 plus & planning a $10,000 upgrade not being VAT registered! Even if your turnover is low, voluntary registration is possible.

Are you saying people really buy Red One's & Epics just as a hobby?

That's a bit of a naïve question. You don't expect a Ferrari owner to be VAT registered do you ? For wealthy enthusiasts - RED cameras are just another toy... and there are plenty out there ;-)

Being VAT registered would not help a Ferrari owner. Being in business and making taxable sales is what counts. Wealthy enthusiasts who buy RED One as a toy should pay VAT as they are the end user, just life of living in Europe.

That is correct below a certain turnover figure, however it is possible to register voluntarily. I did when I was 18, by the time I was 19 my turnover was such that it was a legal requirement.

But Claus is right. The customs madness I encountered when my RedOne died the first time was not fun. Pinewood is the convenient solution. I recently had my camera repaired there. Alan and his colleagues did a great job.

you don't know what you are talking about. Italian custom is a nightmare. They want money no matter what it is about. Such things as temporary exportation apparently does not exist. Simply wanting an item go back to Red in America and back means fighting against the custom who only sees an imported item, even if it's the same, and you pay more times for the same item: can you imagine yourself trying to explain the whole - unusual, to say the least - Red trade-in program? hahaha
You think they suddenly renounce tenths of thousand of custom taxis because you send a Red One and receive a Scarlet or Epic?

the Red One audio card upgrade program is another unnameble problem with the italian custom. I don't know about the american, perhaps it's easier for them, since they are the manufacturer itself.

PLEASE, Red, save all European customer from hell and let us have Pinewood or whatever as a European center for everything Red, ESPECIALLY things involving item shipping like trade-ins, trade-outs, repairs, and of course, buiying first time.

I reminds me of another tune called "2k is enough, who cares. = please don't give us 3k either, it's too much, we don't want it", and also the bestseller called "If you can afford a Red = you can afford zeiss / cooks PL sets..."
But my absolute favourite was "With a cine camera (Red One) = you (need to / want to) tape measure everything = you don't need pixel check for focus... so please, Red - implicit but powerful request against the genuine majority - "DO NOT provide us with pixel check (otherwise others may be happy)"
Oh yes yes yes, I cite that again, I can't help, I can't forget it; It's still in the middle of my stomach and it rumbles when called.

With my VAT I can only clean my ass.
One italian out of 3 has VAT. Imagine 20 million people claiming they are not buying, but ONLY tradin-in, every time they buy a USB pen drive from taiwan, usa, japan, china... but it's good to know life is so easy, uh?
