Amazing how many cold hearted individuals I've seen say utterly cruel things about this woman. I don't care if she decided to stick the needle in, or snort the line...losing your life at 27 is a horrible tragedy.

i had the privilege of watching her record what may have been her last track with Tony Bennet at Abbey Road Studios in March. She was a great talent with an amazing voice. The moment was captured on 2 Reds so at least this experience will be able to be shared.

Taking drugs is mostly started by being forced, by others or a depression. Then even if those bad people or depression goes away you are stuck with the drugs, the most addictive form of substance your body can consume.

So, I can understand if someone who's been taking drugs their entire life and who now quit can criticize her for taking it that far, but for others... I would like to see them come back after using heavy drugs and see how they talk then.

Also, there are studies conducted that show that extremely creative people people may take their emotions to the extreme. When they are sad by "standard" they are depressed", when they are happy by "standard" they are euphoric. This way of reaching deep into emotions cause them to either pursue an euphoric state of mind or getting stuck in depression easily.

People who complain or say she was weak or whatever doesn't know anything about the human behavior or psychology. But you don't have to be a psychology professor to understand that people's situations varies very much from your own. You just have to have a really great ego.

There's always a personal choice. I (and many other people) have all had our fair share of opportunities to partake in substance abuse, but it all comes down to your own individual decision in the end. I feel sorry for children who are born with terminal illness that is completely out of their control, but this otherwise healthy and talented woman sang about her rejection for rehab and a love for drugs, it's almost disrespectful of her. There is nothing to blame but her personal choices. It's not a proper message to send to people (especially younger ones) that her addiction was justified because she was "depressed" or "too creative". No one can force you to do drugs... unless they literally tie you down and shoot you up. Scapegoat-ism is running too rampant these days...

It's easy for people with a great sense of control over their own life to judge people who make lesser choices. What you are saying I hear a lot when someone makes a bad decision to do something or a bad turn in their life. You do not know why she started taking drugs, you do not know if she had enormous pressure from friends who she really don't want to reject. And "personal choice" is also not that black and white. If you read in on behavioral and social science you'll understand that there's little that we as individuals make as personal choice, you are influenced always by your surroundings and people in making a choice. In my opinion judging a person for a lack of strength in a personal choice is a very narrow minded view upon other people and also an overrated belief in your own control over your life. Just how many choices are you doing in your daily life that is truly your own? If you boil down the details you'll understand that there's not much or maybe not even a single choice made without other influences.

If you were about to take drugs and rejected it, it might be because you value something in life that conflicted with that choice, maybe you have friends who don't take drugs, you maybe get your dose of dopamine from other things. But if your only and closest friends take drugs and you spend a lot of time with them, you have a great depression and the only way to get your dopamine running is if you take some more wine, maybe a cigarette... oh I'm just gonna try this joint... oh, just a little test.

In the case of Amy Winehouse I really see the patterns of a very emotional person. Almost a little bipolar (by definition most people have some mental disorder to some degree, it's just that people don't understand what they mean that they judge the disorders as being an idiot) and if depression kicks in there's little to no "choice" for a person who already took drugs. That she sings about not going to rehab might be out of the desperation of loosing one of her only dopamine-generating things in her life at the time.

Yes, it's not good for young people to listen to what she sings, but first, is every song ever made for young people or can there be, like film and games, things that aim for a adult audience? Then again, how many other "messages" do kids get today from other sources that are far more influential then hearing about a rejection to rehab, a thing they really can't relate to. There are far worse things said by politics and hateful people then by someone who inflicts most damage on herself.

I would advice to not view with such judgment upon people making less good choices in life then yourself, it's a dangerous path to distance yourself from understanding other people's reality.

Hi Bryce,
Christoffer Glans made some really good points; well worth the read.

In addition: Addiction is not a choice. Addiction itself is innate. The choice to act on your addiction or not act, is the only choice available. That choice is greatly diminished, once someone is under the influence of their particular addiction.

In regards to Amy's 'Rehab' song, as it turns out, it is the greatest gift she could have left to young influential kids and suffering addicts. She has inadvertently demonstrated the tragic outcome of not choosing rehab.

By his own admission Blake introduced her to crack and heroin so he has to take some of the blame for this, though he can hardly shoulder all of the blame. It's an incredibly difficult road to return from, I have more friends who haven't returned than have. A loss of any life is terrible, an artist who invites us to tour their emotional landscape (from whatever medium) has given us a gift, so the loss is that much greater. The cause of death is irrelevant, her absence will be mourned by many and her life and gifts will be celebrated.

It is said in my culture song is how we speak to God, Creator, etc., and that it is a divine gift.

If we do not recognize and honor our gifts by way of ceremony, there are consequences to this. That which gives, also takes.

Well said Tim. My sentiments exactly.

Not sure what your point is?? Are you saying God killed her for not making a third album?
