I've been using the new QuVis Wraptor plug-in for DCP creation and wanted to let everyone know that I got an email last night that the boys from Kansas that they have updated the app to V1.0.1 - and more exciting for you folks - the now have a FREE 14 day trial. The image will be watermarked - but you can se just how easy it is to make DCPs before you buy.

QuVis includes an Ext2/3 file system driver for Mac OS X allows you to copy the contents of a DCP directly to a USB 2.0 distribution hard that is universally supported by all major digital cinema playback servers.

Here's the copy I got from QuVis -

October 7, 2008 - QuVIS is proud to announce that a new trial version of Wraptor is now available.

First introduced at the 1st Annual IBC FCPUG Supermeet in Amsterdam, Wraptor is the new software plug-in for Apple® Compressor that adds the ability to create a professional-quality, DCI JPEG2000-encoded, AES-encrypted, MXF-wrapped, and distribution-ready Digital Cinema Package (DCP) directly from a Final Cut Studio® project.

Wraptor incorporates the same digital video mastering technology that has made QuVIS a Digital Cinema pioneer and recognized industry leader in image quality. Wraptor provides a low-cost solution for creating Digital Cinema content without sacrificing professional quality or interoperability.

The free Wraptor trial version is fully functional for 14-days. Image content created by the Wraptor Trial version will be visibly watermarked. Click HERE and follow the instructions to download and evaluate Wraptor free-of-charge for 14 days.

Already buggy!

8-core Mac-Pro has all the newest software upgrades (Compressor 3.0.4) but...

I'm familiar with QuVIS from work with the Entertainment Technology Center, neat that they have something you can MYO(make your own) with FCP on your own system! Amazing! I like using JPEG2000 with my Quicktime media as it is.

I don't. I play them in a cinema...

But this is a solution with so many steps (signal wise) and very little controll (in compressor), so there are quite a few places where inconsistensy is introduced.

Yeah, that's my concern. I need to render a DCP version of my feature for a premiere at The Landmark and I'd hate for a "surprise". I'm pretty sure I can arrange a 5 minute sampling of my film to be screened at the same venue. But it is a little nerve racking to render out an entire feature and not know if there were any render errors or dropped frames until premiere night.

Mainly, I'm concerned about my black levels considering my film takes place during a power blackout and the whole film lives or dies in the blacks.

Well, then you'll be fine... Compressor pushes downs the two last gradients to full black in a 16 step grayscale chart, so I guess your film will be all black...

that is not totally true, though, as it is partially format dependant.

Had a lot of issues with gluetools through compressor (to all formats, DCP or otherwise). Moral for me is that as of now it is a no-go.

You need to test and calibrate your CC tool before finishing grading. It's not done by a quick preview IMHO.

Has anyone used the product successfully by now?

I assume from the documentation that one basically has to create a final scene or output that's clean of any "uniqueness" (filters, plugins) before using it.

I also read online that the company was in financial trouble back in December 2008.

Cheers, Markus

I have bought wraptor since two weeks after tested the demo solution. Yes the company is out but I bought it, and on doremi 2K cristy the picture was very nice. For calibration I have made few tests and It's little difficult but not impossible, I must perform my calibration. The big problem is to have a compressor 3.0.3

:innocent: Sorry for my english

Hi all!

I need a DCP tool, but i can't decide... The wraptor worth the price? Or rent dolby, true there is caution 10000 dollars and 200 dollars/month rent prize. For the Wraptor will not update, so will not work with the new final cut. I have tried the trial version, with watermark:-)...it was very cool and slow, the conversion 14-15x real-time. I dont brave enough for the credit card payment...plz write ur opinon.

HELP PLEASE
I need to create a DCP using the wraptor (or anyother way) of a 110min film to screen in a theater.
What type of harddrive do I need to take to the theater? Can it be just 2.0 USB or does it have to have 800 firewire?
Does it need to be formatted for windows? or mac?
Can I just export from my final cut to this drive? I've been told the final files should be 1920x1080 24fps. Is that OK? Does anyone have experience using it? If anyone has the SW and has done it I am willing to pay something to have it done I live in L.A. and I need this to be done by Feb 2nd. Please HELP!

Your Harddrive must be formatted in Ext2/3 file system format (a Linux file system format) is the file system format used on USB 2.0 DCP distribution hard drive preferred by the Digital Cinema distribution facilities.
And your project must be created by compressor with wraptor. Once the batch is done process, the DCP will be stored in the specified destination. You must copy this folder on your harddrive.
that make a big time, for 90min (78Go) => 4 hours with usb 2.0 !

I need to make a 2k DCP for one of our features. Has anyone bought a copy of Wraptor lately? is it still a workable solution if you can setup with the right version of Compressor, presumably not on os 10.6 though? Also does anyone know whether the Dcp produced by Wraptor is still the current generally accepted format.
Unless of course there are any other comparable low cost diy Mac based solutions which I haven't heard about.

Marcus,

DCI spec hasn't changed, so Wraptor still produces an acceptable output.

Its a bit of a kluge to get Wraptor running on the right version of the OS, Compressor, and Quicktime versions--but if definitely works. We used it last December to generate DCP for a new digital theater here in Folsom and the packages worked just fine on their Dolby DCP servers.
