Quick question about the latest RED 17-50

Hello!

Planning to get a short zoom and this lens would fit the bill perfectly but I keep hearing whining about build quality. Is the final version truly par-focal and no play in the focus ring?

I can't speak for anyone else but my copy of this lens is flawless and is on par with anything else out there in it's category. Great buy! You won't regret the decision to get it.

1st I dont think there is a zoom in that range (cost,size,range) and I have heard a lot of complaints about the older version. The most important thing for me is par-focal (if I set the focus on 50mm will the focus be still correct if I zoom out). The second important thing is focus gear backslash (when reversing turning direction is there a small movement of gear when focus does not move).
I understand that one gets what he pays for but if these 2 criteria are not met I will have to get a bigger loan and move up in the game to 20K range short zooms.
If somebody could confirm that these 2 items are ok I can take a gamble.

BTW: Is there some sort of quality minimum if buy from from RED direct (not used) and the lens is not par-focal will it be replaced?

It is parfocal, and my copy has no focus backlash. The 18-50 wasn't great mechanically, but the 17-50 is.
