  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Quick help on set, please; recording audio at 30fps

Good to know as I had the exact same problem. Thanks!

Guys, I really can't stress enough - if you have mad such a large investment as a RED camera - please take the time to read the Op manual from start to finish (Practicing everything with your camera as you go), even if it's stuff that you think you know well...

It's a free download from www.red.com

Ahh. The amount of people that buy reds and then dont know what the hell there doing >:( RTFM!!!! Anyway, how do i turn my scarlet on again?

We all start somewhere - I think everyone at some point asks a newb question at some point (I have)..

x1Billion….

I suspect a lot of the problem / horror stories that keep producers from renting Scarlets (& Epics) from owner operators is down to operator incompetence, and a healthy dose of owning the cheapest bare minimum of gear. So what if you own the best 4K RAW Cinema camera on the planet - if you don't know how to use it, then slap on some shitty lenses & put the whole thing on a jerry rigged set of sticks not suitable for a flip cam.

Someone asked a few days ago where to find firmware updates - why not try the Sony website?

*End Rant*
**This rant was in no way directed as an attack at the OP - just an observation of the community at large**

Yep thus why every evening after work I'm attached to my Scarlet.
So much to learn so little time.
I want to condition myself like a well tuned athlete when it comes to working my baby ;)

Exactly... Whats the point of the reduser group if not to help, share, and comment at all levels. We all have something to learn :)

Yeah but… Basic camera operation / set-up questions being asked from set; on the shoot day? Come on… Some of these are things you should know before being hired or at least to be worked out during prep.

There was a time not so long ago where this was a craft that you spent years learning from your peers on set - and when you finally added D.P. or Cinematographer to the end of your name it meant something...

I'm not gonna lie (I'm sure I'll get heckled for this) but my first problem with the Scarlet was the sensor cap.
I couldn't get the damn thing off not realizing you need to press down on release and spin mount.
So much different from the RED MX.
I almost had to post that question :P

Question asked, Question answered by Red.

Why should that upset you? Why dump on people for asking questions and wanting to get better?

Not everyone has 25+ years of experience, I certainly don't, maybe the OP doesn't either. Kudos for him for asking questions - he's better for it and knows for next time.
Just like I did when I had to get Alan Piper to give me advice on what sort of fuse to put in the ac adapter when my Scarlet-X came - and no, my 8 years of shooting didn't help me there, and I didn't research it before my camera arrived.

I'm sure your rant is aimed at someone / something specific rather than the OP, and you're proababy not intending to discourage asking questions, but please be kind to the people still learning and willing to admit gaps in knowledge and seek to get better.

Hey I'm all for asking questions and learning about the craft - and even after 25+ years on set, I still learn something new every time I point the camera or a light somewhere.

My over arching point is that when you take a job (even a no budget job for one of your friends) you should know the basic camera set-up needed for that job and deal with the simple issues on the prep day. Not on set on the shoot day while the producer is burning money and you're consulting a web forum instead of the camera manual that you should have in your kit bag. On jobs where the camera is a rental, the prep day is unbelievably crucial. On jobs where you own the camera; prep is still needed to make sure the settings the producer / director / post house want are dialled in and work...

Yeah I'm ranting, but I'm also trying to pass on the knowledge that if you want to get somewhere in this business you should take it seriously and show up on set prepared. Shit happens on set (God I know that) that you can't always prepare for, but part of being a great D.P. or 1st A.C. is crisis management.

I take on board, and largely agree with all of your points... but, and this is my opinion, maybe a paragraph about preperation being key, or a checklist of the top 5 'to-dos' in a Red Shoot environment wouldve been more helpful than a rant.

Like I said, I'm sure you don't mean it the way, to me, it comes accross - I'm sure your valued experience could help much more without making people regret asking questions for fear of a rant - I'm sure you have much to offer, and people would benifit greatly
