Hi guys,
Had our new laptop for 1 week and thought I would post our first impressions.
This is a pretty big laptop at 4.5kg with 17" monitor.
What we will use it for is making VFX on site, and also reviewin/editing/grading Red media.
I searched long and hard for good laptops, but found out that most thinner ones had too many problems with overheating so decided to get a bigger one.
Specs
Hexa 4.3GHz
64GB Ram upgradable to 128GB which is useful in Redcine
3x2TB M.2 disk, pretty insane. Very fast at 3500MB/s read speed.
Also a 4TB "normal" SSD. In total 10TB of harddrive space
Full 1080 GTX GPU. Of course if we would have waited for quite some time we would have had 2080 RTX, but we did not have time to wait.
It also has 5 USB 3.1 which is great and 1 TB3 plus a surprising 10Gbit Ethernet card.
UHD monitor that has pretty good specs. Almost full coverage of Adobe RGB and 450 nits which is brighter than most.
Computer was built and modified by Hidevolution. They applied cooling to improve cooling (about 10-15 degress supposedly) and also open up the bottom a bit. In total this should reduce temperature with about 15C at maximum.
Red tests
Now, the cool thing is I can playback 8k helium videos at 1/4 debayer in realtime which means you can inspect sharpness pretty well. If I do 1/2 debayer I need to buffer a while, but after say waiting for 20 seconds I can playback around a minute without buffering again.
Temperature never goes higher than 81 degrees which is very impressive and I can run at 4.0-4.3GHz steadily. Most thinner laptops hit 95 degrees and then throttle very aggresively.
Also fans are really quite low as well. Much lower than my Macbook Pro when looking at Red media.
Main downside is that the power cables are ..... 2.1kg! Battery time is also only a few hours, but if you use it as a movable desktop this is less of a problem.
All to all very happy. And the most important feature of all, the keys pulsate with color like ehh a rainbow which of course is programmable
