  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

QUICK & EASY REDCINE X - FCP WORKFLOW

This is a good guide.

Now ... I'm gonna split some hairs by talking about edge cases.

I disagree with this workflow. I think its a 90% solution.

A good shooter that shoots how they mean to final will get good results with it, but the further that is from the case the less it will serve.

I prefer to use Resolve Lite for the start of my post (or Storm, but I haven't really tried that yet, when I did I had a key problem and I was too lazy to figure it out.)

So, with Resolve I can do a fast "one light" grade, and get close to the Rec709 look I want to deliver. Then I usually choose to output ProRes 4444 (which is overkill for some projects ... but it costs me little in the end, and I get better data if I need it.)

Now I post in FCP, and never ever use its color controls.

Historically I've sent clips to VFX from FCP, but I think I'll start doing that from Resolve. This is a preference - either will work.

Then I output to Resolve for final coloring. (I usually grade "full scale" not Rec 709)

When I finish in FCP as a last step I may apply the broadcast safe effect if needed.

The key difference is that by pushing my looks towards final in Resolve at the start of the process, I can readily avoid Final Cut's color processing and take full advantage of the flexibility of R3D. Then when I am done editing, I can finish picture in Resolve.

I also preserve the ability to reconform rather easily to R3D if need be.

So, most of the time my results would be identical if I switched to Mark's exact workflow, but in a very few cases I feel (keyword right there) that I work better with this workflow, and that I preserve more flexibility.

Now ... I also disagree with Mark about the quality of results using the "transcode early" type of workflow.

I believe that there is a demonstrable difference in image quality between an end to end R3D workflow and any transcode early workflow, like both presented here. (But also workflows that transcode to DPX or OpenEXR, etc.)

The question is if that difference matters to your project?

My response is that it only matters on theatrical finishing, and even then it matters only in a small minority of shots. Also any 4K finishing. Today these are edge cases really. You will know if you fit in the category that should spend the time and money to make an end to end R3D workflow work for you and wring out that last little bit.

So, for most shooters on most projects, transcode early style workflows will generate all the results they might want very easily.

Now I want to stress again that the workflow Mark has shared is solid and generates great results, but its not the absolute final word.

I 100% agree - I also can see huge problems with half-debayer - this is not at all the same as full debayer and then scaling down. You might not see it in a slightly out of focus man's mouth, but you certainly would on a detailed scene with fine lines (including fabrics).

We have an even cheaper approach: it's called edit in PPro, send EDL to Resolve - you're done - no transcoding needed except of chosen segments in edit itself. Has benefit of staying in raw until the end.

?... because it makes PRORES... ??

Put a KIPRO MINI on the back of the EPIC for $2000 and you have made your self an ALEXA. Plus you can get a LOG signal from the EPIC for better grading.

And all this still costs half as much and is still half the size.. And you can also get 5k RAW and HD PRO RES at the same time... ALEXA only does one or the other.

Just sharing.. :))))

Not really, because the preview output while 1080p is line-slipped and approximate at best.

Hi Mark,
Greeting from Jakarta. Many thanks for the tips always,as my colleague here always got new knowledge everytime you come here. We always excited and discuss what you've done here. looking forward to meet you in Jakarta again, and always keep up the good work!

Cheers mate. :)

@Christian regarding DaVinci Resolve:

The FXPHD tutorial wil teach you how to operate the program. The books "Color Correction Handbook: Professional Techniques for Video and Cinema" by Alexis van Hurkman and "The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction" by Steve Hullfish will give you an introduction to the craft. After that, grab any chance to sit and watch with an experienced pro!

Wow, after billions of years of evolution, an earthworm provides infinitely more value to the universe and humanity than that second commercial in the samples above.

With all due respect to you Mark, and I know you might just do it for the money, I dearly hope you have an epiphany one day and stop being involved with that utter vacuous, inane, bombastic, wasteful, excrement.

If there was a galactic court arguing whether the humans should be vaporised I hope our barrister has his wits about him, because if that commercial is Exhibit A, then God help us all.

(The earthworms' barrister is on far safer ground, which is kinda sad.)

The plea bargain may very well be that only a minority of humans were responsible for that, so please just kill them only. :)
