I have a workflow efficiency issue I'm hoping someone could help me with.

I get requests to do quick color passes (first light/ color balance type stuff) to some files that fall outside of the RedCine X workflow for me.

Essentially what I have to achieve, is a quick grade that outputs to an offline (1080/720) prores file from a source DPX or ProRes file.

Apple Color covers me in terms of the adjustments I need to do, however the problem is that the files it renders out are split up into folders and renamed, making batch jobs tedious. I'd like to be able to add a batch of lets say 20 movies and output the Color corrected versions with the same name to a different folder.

I'm open to purchasing additional software.

Thanks in advance.

Resolve

While I am on the boat for buying Resolve once it ships, I'm looking for an available solution right now. I learned that shipping dates change and I can't depend on them, especially when a product is already past it's launch window.

So I'm still open to suggestions until the resolve solution arrives and hopefully does what it is expected to do.

There are 3 color grading software for Mac that I know:
Apple Color, DaVinci Resolve and SpeedGrade.

I don't know if SpeedGrade will fix your problem, but I'm definitely sure DaVinci Resolve can render out using source file name, timecode and also can retain the original folder structure.

But if you want NOW, your best bet is to send an email to Iridas support and ask about your problem before you order SpeedGrade.

Take a look at:

Speedgrade Onset
3cP

I am not sure that Speedgrade onset renders out files, but 3cP does. I have some issues with the way 3cP works with Red footage, but non-Red footage works pretty good and it will render out your files with grade and lots of info, and it keeps the base filename.

Or maybe just something simple like Colorista in FCP

would colorista II in fcp or after effects work?
check it out here:
http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-colorista-II/

Thanks for the suggestions.

What after effects does in terms of colour is sufficient, this is very basic looks for editors that like something other than the log files that are prepared. (this is for mixed Red / Phantom Jobs), but I don't see any way to drag a set of files and have them out puted as individual files in a batch.

I will have to look at Colorista, I don't know anything about it.
I will also look at Speedgrade OnSet.

It's already shipping and it does what you're asking for, very well I may add:-)

Blackmagic Design ships DaVinci Resolve 7.0

Blackmagic Design ships DaVinci Resolve 7.0

The press release: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/press/detail.asp?pressID=224

IBC 2010, Amsterdam, The Netherlands - September 10, 2010 - Blackmagic Design today announced DaVinci Resolve 7.0 is now shipping, starting from only $995.

DaVinci Resolve 7.0 will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design IBC 2010 booth #7.B25.

DaVinci Resolve is the world’s most popular high end DI grading system with powerful features used by both Hollywood and high end post production worldwide. Now with the new DaVinci Resolve on Mac OS X, these high end features are available on the platform that’s popular with creative professionals.

DaVinci Resolve 7.0 now includes a new user interface which provides quick, simple and intuitive creative control without clutter and bloat that make other color grading systems difficult and slow to use. Only DaVinci Resolve has been developed with colorists and benefits from the decades of DaVinci color grading experience.

The new DaVinci Resolve 7.0 for Mac now reads and writes all the common Apple ProRes file formats including 4444, 422, 422(HQ), 422 (Proxy) and 422 (LT) directly on the timeline with no conversion required. Colorists can just select the clips in their media storage and DaVinci Resolve will play and grade them in real time, even if there are mixed resolutions and formats on the timeline.

Both Mac OSX and Linux systems now support read and write of DNxHD files with the optional DaVinci Resolve DNxHD Update. This optional $500 update allows native DNxHD media files to move instantly between Avid and DaVinci Resolve.

For production using the new generation of DSLR cameras such as the Canon 5D, DaVinci Resolve 7.0 now supports read and write of H.264 files on Mac and playback on Linux. Now colorists can grade directly from DSLR media files in real time for professional production from these high quality and affordable cameras. DSLR cameras look as good as the highest end film camera with the color treatments that only DaVinci Resolve specializes in. Also supported in DaVinci Resolve, is full playback support for native Cineform 2D and 3D and SI-2K files for playback and grading in real time.

DaVinci Resolve now supports RED Rocket cards on both Mac OS X and Linux platforms for native r3d file grading with full resolution decoding and premium debayer all in real time. Colorists can now extract r3d reel names from either FCP, Adobe or Avid EDLs, grade and render to ProRes or DPX or DNxHD at near real time speeds. On Linux, DaVinci Resolve now supports dual RED Rocket cards in a single computer for stereoscopic 3D real time performance with r3d files at full camera image quality.

DaVinci Resolve 7.0 massively upgrades the stereoscopic 3D grading features and now includes 3D features on the Mac OS X platform that previously required multiple Linux CPUs. DaVinci Resolve 7.0 now features a new convergence control tool to let colorists separately program pan adjustments to change the point of convergence on 3D projects while still making individual eye pan adjustments
The new stereoscopic 3D support now lets colorists play back, grade and monitor in 3D using side-by-side and line mesh displays. This allows even lower cost Mac OS X DaVinci Resolve systems to work on complex stereoscopic 3D projects!

DaVinci Resolve 7.0 lets colorists apply grades made on one eye, automatically apply to the other eye so colorists can see the result instantly.

A new eye matching tool is included so colorists can compare between eyes with a color or B&W difference display, or a new checkerboard view that allows a more accurate comparison in greater detail. Rendering a side-by-side Stereoscopic 3D project is now extremely fast, so clients can review the finished project immediately after grading.

All existing DaVinci customers who have an older model DaVinci Resolve or DaVinci Splice will qualify to get this new version 7.0 software at no charge. In addition, anyone who has an older DaVinci 2K system can use the control surface they have, and upgrade to DaVinci Resolve by paying only for the Linux license. Now all these existing DaVinci customers will get a very affordable way to upgrade to the latest technology simply by purchasing a new Linux computer and GPU.

Availability and Price

DaVinci Resolve 7.0 is available now starting from US$995 for the software only Mac OS X version from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide. DaVinci Resolve on Linux is available from Blackmagic Design DaVinci Specialists worldwide.

If it's shipping that is excellent.

I must say the 3cP software looks good too. I grabbed the demo.
I encountered two problems though.
Avid output is .ale but with quitime DNxHD rather than MXF files. Editors I deal with always request MXF. REDCINE X is amazing in that regard.

The other issue is my imported DPX files lost the original time code.

If I can get around those issues this tool will find it's place in my workflow even with Resolve being on another system.

I am talking to the developers about getting MXF files also, but I don't think it is going to happen. DNxHD Quicktime and ALE files is the best we can expect right now.

The timecode this is a real problem though. I haven't used 3cP with DPX files yet. I will try and see if maybe it is just a bug in the demo.

One thing I like about 3cP is you can put a little header on the rendered files that has lots of useful info about any corrections you have made in 3cP and a lot of data like scene number, take, notes. Stuff that is in the metadata, but just incase it gets lost or something you have a visual reference.

No question the software seems perfect for generating offline editorial content. This goes actually beyond my initial thread question and solves a lot more than I asked for.

The time code issue however keeps me from being able to use it. I can't seem to open my phantom raw files for some reason (with glue tools installed). I tried to email them for support, but their spam blocker rejected my mail.

Depending on how much work you need to do, you might end up being able to use Clipfinder/RC-X to do what you need. Obviously if you're actually doing significant *grading*, this is a less-than-optimal option. But if all you're doing is cleanup/touchup, it might work. Cheaper option.
