Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone here has bought a RED camera... purely for hobbyist reasons ?

For example, Using the camera only for personal shoots and not professionally to earn money back to cover the costs of the camera and such.

Just curious :)

Even though I lie from them, I bought them to be able to do my own stuff, if that's what you mean...

I am not into rentals.

Oh I see, I was planning to do the same, but I saw how everyone here uses it for professional work or rental so I thought I might be the only one getting it for personal use.

+1 too

Your not alone, I started off with the RED One but didn't use it much because of its size, with the EPIC and Scarlet, its all personal shoots and the chance of making a dime back is minimal at best... that said, I do love having a camera with me on my travels and I do love helping out friends who are aspiring to be filmmakers, so I would tend to lend the Scarlet out to them (at least when I get it I will) - so not a pro, wish I was, love learning from the guys here and thankfully people tollerate my stupid questions enough to help me understand things a little

The only reason im looking at getting one is for personal use... i cant imagine not having full creative freedom....For me making money would just get in the way of that process......Sorry crazy artest here.... Wouldn't put anything else on a gallery wall now having seen the quality of work from users here.

I got mine without really knowing how or if it would make money. Just knew I needed to have it to do what I wanted to do.

In the end it has caused dump trucks full of money to drive up to my house! Sometimes you just have to jump in head first.

Happy diving!

Nice to know so many who have purchased RED cameras for such reasons :)

I thought I was the only one there... hehe.

I am the only one who uses my Camera, or a DoP under my Direction. I use it only on my productions or when I act as DoP on another Production. In other words I don't rent it. Is a money losing enterprise a hobby? I guess it depends on how much time you spend at it.

Exactly what I plan to do with my Epic. What comes in terms of income is a plus. I intend to use this for my creative personal work.

I think the vast majority of us use it for our own production, often as a one-man band or very small crew. Mine spans from just me to a crew of 20, and everything in between. Perfect tool for the job in all instances.

I was lucky enough to buy my Epic with money I made from my Red One rentals in 2011. Because of this, I don't entertain low ball offers on rentals which is all I have been called for since getting the Epic. If someone wants my Epic for full rate w/o discounts, that's great but I bought the camera to use on my own shoots that I DP and direct. It makes me money in other ways.
