  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Question to you SIDE HANDLE owners...

Same As

Same As

After a few months Im seeing the same problem with the tab and my 8 Redvolts.
Bending the tab down a little keeps them in long enough to get the door closed & finish the shoot but its only temporary.

Will send it in when the quad batt module arrives, though as its easily replaced perhaps if the tab is revised it could be posted out to those affected

thx
jas

I am having the same problem. It's a fault in the handle obviously.

I still waiting on the coveted side handle but am not looking forward to this. Maybe if this happens enough we could have another user installable part like the port bushing....

Wouldn't worry. I'm sure the people who are experiencing this problem are a minority. I just got mine back from RED and now it works perfectly!
If something is wrong they'll fix it.

Hi, just received the SIDE HANDLE and inserted a REDVOLT (haven't got the EPIC yet).
What I noticed was that it's extremely easy for the REDVOLT to "pop out" again from the red plastic lock-mechanism.
It stays in place one in ten tries and that is if I press quite hard on its upper let corner.
I guess that it will stay firmly in place once the battery door is closed but it would be good to have someone to confirm this since the 90-day warranty has started counting and no EPIC-X :scared:

Merry christmas!

5 different side grips, 3 of our own.... And all have the same problem... Really starting to piss me off... Because I'm a huge RED VOLT fan !!!

Took me about 10 minutes to get one to stick in just long enough to slam the little door shut !!!! Typically right in the middle of a really tricky shot!

I think if you ripped the little spring out the back of it to stop it pushing out that would work. But do we really have to resort to such tactics..

Love to know what they did to fix it, So we can all home fix it.... sending gear back and forth to the states all the time becomes a pain in the behind.

Thats a better idea! I hate having to send parts back all the time... lets hope its a easy fix and replacement parts sent out.

This is great news for someone still awaiting accessories like the faulty side handle, redmote and I'm even hearing about the LCD.

The side handle is, in my opinion, the Archilles Heel of the EPIC as a highly mobile camera and a real worry in its present state of design. The batteries pop out, and my control-wheel just popped off this evening. On its own accord. My drama is the side handle is what I use to work the camera outside; it is, indeed, the only way of controlling the EPIC, when you have your eye pressed to the view-finder.
You can't use the REDMOTE because if you're a mobile shooter, you'll be using some sort of mounted BRICK arrangement on the back - which covers the V mount for the MOTE. And the MOTE ain't that reliable when it comes to wireless. So, here we have a mission critical operational part with problems in back-order. OK. The fallback is the touch screen. But if that were to go...I'm dead in the water. None of this dampens my enthusiasm to shoot RED. It just scares the shit out of me when I'm in Australia and we have no RED service centres. LEMAC. Hear our pleas.

Brett its stories like these that make me panic as I don't intend to have a Touch LCD nor Side Handle as I don't like either of them and I want to control and setup the camera with the RedMote only... as that is its primary purpose after all.

Brett, Mark...
Maaaates I just popped out the red tab and filed the flat of the claw that holds back the RV with just a little more angle... Just a little more bite.

Not ideal and of course but will get you through the shoot day and I'll get it sorted properly when the body needs something major done but for now it seems to work fine and no 2 week 'down under down time'

How exactly does one "pop out" the tab? I can see a bit of spring steel behind the tab which I am hoping to tweak a little to avoid sending my sidehandle back to RED.

Thanks Jason. (Checked our your podcasts. You superstar!) I spoke with RED today; they acknowledged some side handles had problems with both batteries and control-wheels coming off, which was actually especially re-assuring, as at least you know, they know, there is a problem. The first step in rehab! The latest set of side handles have no such problems. I've ordered a new side handle - wait time, three weeks (plus). Then I will send mine back. This stuff is a pain. We all know that. Yet. I still have absolutely no regrets about investing in this gear. I would like a little bit more lovin' but maybe its just our accents.

As Brent posted our engineers are aware of this issue and they are working on a solution. I recommend contacting RED SUPPORT directly by sending us a tech support ticket here https://www.red.com/contact_us/new.

This is great news, so glad that you guys are working on a better version of the flip tung to keep the Redvolt in place, because I love the Side Handle grip on the Epic, and more times then none, I couldn't do without it, but this little Plastic piece that has created issues more then once is a bit of a PAIN, I gladly would pay an additional $100/300 for an improved Stainless Steel version, instead of the Plastic one.

But also a word of caution to the end users is that I have seen this fail right at the very first time been used, yet they were working just fine when I first used, so what happens?

What happens is that the plastic flip tung if the Redvolt is not in all the way, and the door is forced close, then the plastic tung gets bent, and then will never go back to normal, as it is plastic!!

So people do need ot pay attention to what they are doing, however we do need a stronger more PRO version of this part to go in to our Side Handles, and look forward to when this replacement parts do become available at the RED store... ;)

I'd pay an extra $1,000. The Side Handle makes it for me; I use the BOMB and my hand naturally goes to the side handle. The REDMOTE is great. But unreliable in wireless-prone-bombarded environments. The LCD screen is awesome. Indoors. Gimme the BOMB and the side-handle any day of the week. And Ketchi Rossi to show me how to attach it.

Both of our side-handles are working without a problem so far.

I'm another with the latch failing. And paying a grand for a new latch would make head explode.

Will try some of the DIY fixes and file a support ticket.

Best

What do mean by "paying a grand for a new latch"?

He was refering to post #53 above

I ordered a second side handle. One of the new batch, which doesn't have the battery problems, or the control wheel falling off. I will now send our old handle back for the fix.
It arrived this week.
This gives me two side handles, the LCD and the REMOTE as my controllers.
The Redmote I hardly use. It is getting more reliable with new releases. And the V plate where it attaches is now covered by the battery plate, so I can use Bricks to power the thing.
I use the LCD when I'm inside. Its too hard to see outside.
That's my work-around.

just got our second side handle a week ago, and connected it today, and the battery pops out, brand new out of the box.... ugh...
