  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Question regarding size of monitor and render speed?

I'm looking to buy a Mac Pro in the future (6-12 months) and I'm also trying to decide which size monitor to get with it. I'm leaning towards the 30 inch that can produce 2560 x 1600, but I'm not sure. The reason so is, I read a post/thread earlier where someone had switched from either a 20 or 23 inch to the 30 inch, and all of a sudden, the amount of time it took to render the same footage increased significantly. I'm by no means a Mac expert, or computer/editing expert for that matter. I barely ever use Macs or do editing (more so my partner's strength). However, I was just wondering if someone can explain the relationship, if any between monitor size and the amount of time it takes to render clips.

That'll be the preview in Redcine.

You need to set the preview (which shows frame by frame as you render) to the same debayer quality and minimise it as much as you can. You'll be using precious graphics card power to preview otherwise thus slowing render times.

I believe that Redcine does most of its work with the GPU and if it is busy refreshing a 2560x1600 32bit display, that leaves less GPU cycles to work on the Red footage.

If the display is already heavily taxing the GPU, it would only make sense that the render times would suffer. It follows that running dual monitors also causes a hit.

Maybe someone could runs some tests to see- it should be as simple as rendering out with the display set to its full resolution/bit depth and then render again at the lowest resolution/bit depth the card/monitor/Redcine will allow.
