hi there,

so i will be doing some transcoding to QTs for an upcoming job. The DP wants to create 'looks' for the shots while on the road. the hard drives will then be sent back to me and i will transcode to prores 422 QTs using either Compressor or Log and Transfer in FCP. Couple of questions....

1. Can he set the 'looks' he wants in RedCine and then I can use those looks, or does it HAVE to be done in RedAlert? Remember, my goal here is to transcode ProRes QTs for use as the offline edit, with these 'looks' applied.

2. If I use either RedCine to do this (with your advice) or RedAlert (to generate new QT proxies that I would then drop into Compressor to transcode) what happens to the audio in these files?

First, (I am am sure you know this but just in case) NEVER work with the original camera files. Make backups and work only with a second copy.

It really depends on what you mean by "looks". making a "look" in Red Cine is somewhat limited, but yes it can be done. You will lose the audio, but you should have extracted it first from the proxies and then re-synced it in FC

definitely won't be working with the original camera files. we will actually have 4 backups (3 on Hard Drives, and 1 on LTO3 tape) by the time I am actually transcoding the files into ProRes for the offline edit.

So if I use RedCine instead of Compressor to transcode the .r3d files into ProRes QT files, these will be fine, and reatain all their proper Reel ID and timecode when it comes time for the conform later on?

Does anyone know if when a new QT proxy is generated from within RedAlert if this new proxy will have the audio with it or not?

only way to get audio is with the log and transfer plug in...RA/RC are not passing or extracting audio
