Hi Jim,

Congrats on the new products, I am wishing I had a time machine so I could go a year into the future pick up a RED EPIC, and bring it back to shoot my new film. We are shooting quite an epic film starting in July to follow up my debut Cannes selection film 2:37. To think, that was an indy film we shot SD, and we're shooting our new one at 4K, simply blows my mind!!!!!

Not to worry, I'm still psyched to be shooting it on RED ONE.

Anyway to my question. A few months back you posted on this forum saying something to the effect that 'sony had officially pissed you off' and to 'wait till NAB'.

Are you able to give us a bit more background into that now? Did that influence your decision to announce Scarlett and Epic at this years NAB? Do you know if any other company's like Sony are working on products that will challenge those of RED (in terms of specs) that pushed you to announce these two amazing products early?

I'm sure you're not allowed to divulge any of this, but I am dead curious about the politics that played out behind the scenes for you to decide that you will use this years NAB to put the nails in the respective coffins of your competitors?

Also, can you comment on the Dynamic Range of the new Mysterium Chips? That is the one thing I'm DYING to hear about.

Would love to hear your thoughts on all this.

Cheers Jim.

No...

I remember Panny dismissing HD-SDI on the HVX because it would "double the cost".

here ya go with REDRay (4 ports/1000$) and Epic (3k and 3000$)...

Cheers!

Ah, Sony :bleh: :bleh: :bleh:

Yeah, at long last they finally have figured out that a single S35mm size sensor is what people actually want in a digital cine camera. Great... the F35, boasting a groundbreaking 1920 x 1080 resolution.

How long is it going to take for the established mainstream to figure out 1080p is a broadcast HD format, not digital cinema?

Perhaps soon after they figure out how to make a Cine camera smaller than a fridge and costing less than five times the average yearly income.

The market share/size of selling digital cameras equipment to shooters & rental houses is really small potatoes compared to putting a RED RAY "4K movie player" in the living rooms of vast numbers of homes globally... Oh yeah... and don't forget to sell them a reasonably priced 4K screen or projector while your at it.

That's potentially a much bigger blow to Sony's pockets...

I don't think Red Ray is what Jim was talking about just yet, because quite frankly (and correct me if I'm wrong) but 4K on a 50inch screen is just not necessary, you don't need that much resolution for such a small screen. I think there is more to it...

Jim -- keen to shed some light on the matter? ha ha

best,

M

Please, clarify on those figures?

RED RAY'll be ~ 1000 $?

EPic - 3000 $? That must be Scarlet, I guess?

10x.

Yes. Scarlet is $3,000 and Epic I hear if $30,000-$40,000.
