  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone used this lens with the Red MX? Obviously I don't have a lot of experience with using lenses other than Red Primes, but an interested in this one for the zoom... I'd like to know if it will work...

Thanks!

I'm not sure I know what you mean... It says it is a 10mm to 100mm zoom. Is that what you're asking?

It is a lens for 16mm format, so it will only work on 2K mode on RED. With 4K it will vignette a lot.

Exactly. Its a 16mm zoom. Not even Super 16mm. ONLY covers 2k. Great zoom range though, very light weight, and fantastic for lowlight. Hello? A F 1.8 10x zoom!

Breathes quite a lot.

Thank you so much! That's what I needed to know. I don't need that...

That would be an insane lens if it was s35

Try to get the Canon V10x15 instead, it covers S-16 (actually made for one inch). It should work even for 3K HD.

There are a few others of these lenses, like the Canon TV Zoom V6x16 1.9/16-100mm.
All Canon lenses with the "V" in front of the zoom range cover 1 inch. They made a few nice primes too.

Thank you all so much for the help! It is much appreciated!

Great lens. i have one my self. it can be converted to super 16 by duclose. If you get a deal, like the one i'm offering on ebay, with just a few bucks spent at duclose, you have a pretty nice lens worth quite a few bucks. does breath though… but the V2 corrected that and introduced other "problems". in my opinion, this is the better lens of the 3 versions Zeiss made...

I used the Zeiss 10-100 1.8 on this spot last month - on Scarlet @ 2k:

Vignettes hard at the wide end at 2K, but still very usable (and very helpful in our low light conditions, FYI). The 10x zoom is very addictive also, especially in such a small, portable package!

I'm considering having Peter at RP lens "Leitax" my lens and make it EOS mount (to match rest of my glass)...and I'm curious what happens then when we add a 1.4 or 2x full frame extender on it...what kind of coverage we could get (3k? 4k?). Kubrick used a 1.4 doubler to have his 12-240 cover Academy, so this much extra coverage is not out of the question. I'm sure expanding the coverage would open up possibility of some extra optical aberrations, but I'm still curious to see what happens myself!

Hello Nick! Any news regarding your last post here ? I have one myself also and :
Zeiss does not offers anymore the conversion, Abakus still has an adapter. How much is Duclos conversion ?

Only a small update. I've had the 10-100 "Leitaxed" to EOS mount by RP Lens. Next step is I'm sending them several Contax Mutars (1.4 and 2.0) which we're going to also LEITAX and add a spacer/extender to so that the converters back elements clear the zoom (I believe Kubrick did something similar?). We are basically stumbling forward...slowly...trying to follow Kubrick's route of blowing up a 16mm zoom.

Our ultimate goal...like his...is to have MORE than s16mm coverage. He obtained Academy coverage with his 12-240, I'd settle or 3K MX coverage myself. Or even better....4K Dragon.

Wow! I am gonna follow you on this one ! Any efect on the F stops ?

I have the Arri Zeiss 12-120 2.0 PL super 16mm that i use with the pocket camera. I have heard that Zeiss made a 2X PL converter that makes it cover s35 and only loses one stop.
Anyone know anything about that?
Thanks,
Tim

A 1.4 converter loses 1 stop a x2 looses 2 stops. A 1.4 will probably do the trick.

I thought the 2x converters eat-up two-stops of light (putting you at ~T4). The good ones are also quite expensive (more than the cost of the lens) and they basically double the lens' inherent artefacts (as you're essentially magnifying the image and zooming in on it's CA/distortions/etc).

Even still, I've always wanted to try; it'd be a super small & light set up with a very decent range. Are there rental houses in Portland? They probably have one in the back, sitting unused and collecting dust that you could test out with your lens (presuming you had access to an s35/PL camera).

EDIT: @Stephen, really?! Do you have any examples/sample .r3ds you could post (or send me -- pm me if you prefer email)? Also what host lens and which adapter are you specifically using?

Yeah, right two stops . I was being optimistic.
This is from Reduser :

"They are rare as a needle in a haystack, I have searched for one of these forever - and finally found one,
and even another one, that now I don't really need, so I can pass it on to a lucky buyer.

They were made to go with the Zeiss 11-110 and 10-100 S16 Zooms originally, as well as some of their S35
primes such as the 300mm. As only the fewest 2x adapters do, these will actually enlarge the image circle -
which means the 11-110 S16 Zoom will cover an S35 Sensor with it (I can personally confirm it covers the
Blackmagic 4K PL Cinema Camera S35 Sensor fully).

There is only 2 stops of light loss and the superb Zeiss optics in this make for no degradation in image quality.
Reports say the Zeiss 11-110 S16 Zoom will resolve at least 4K with this adapter (in its ARRI B-Mount version,
that has the same optics but is limited to very few lenses and much easier to find).

What's more, is that this Mutar has been modified by a Munich lens service to fit a wider array of lenses, as an
internal metal ring has been modified to allow as much space inside the adapter as possible.

The optics are in pristine, absolutely clean condition. Please refer to the photos to see that the whole adapter
is in mint condition as well. It comes with a PL front cap."

Yes the 1.4 will lose one stop, but the "spacer" we need to add probably makes it more of a 1.6.

So we'll lose probably a stop and a bit.

Considering the zoom is a 1.8, that would put us at a 2.8 or 3.3. Which is fine for me. This zoom is SO TINY, to have a super portable 10x Zoom that covers Academy (or close to) would be amazing. My goal is to cover Dragon 4K. Its my "lens project" this year.

I'd also love this mutar to work on the Angy 12-240, so we could LITERALLY do a Kubrick and make that 20x zoom cover Academy (I've been chasing this dream for a while).

I read a book about Kubrick a couple of years ago, and I've been trying to blow up 16mm zooms to Acadamy (in his honor) for a while now.

I'll keep you posted.
