Okay. I am not an audio expert here. I am currently making 5.1 dolby digital video with premiere cs5 and surcode plug-in.

I know how to enable sound only for left, right, rear left and rear right alone. But how do I make it so that sound goes from rear left to rear right so that it feels like a thing is moving around me?

Thanks!

u will need to have your sound playing on all 4 channels but pan in and out 2 channels at a time in a sequence so it seems to be moving around you when its just one speaker stops playing and the other starts.

at least i think thats how you do it.

You should be mixing in a dedicated audio program for surround mixes. They have dedicated panners that allow you to pan a sound source around your surround sound field. It's as easy as dragging a dot around a circle to pan around the speakers. Much easier than doing it in a video app.

Pretty lame they don't have a basic 5.1 tool.

Kenn is right, I would do it on a 5.1 enabled application. Now keep in mind that you need a professional 5.1 installation to be able to mix 5.1. Without one you are flying blind.

Just open 5.1 audio channel and drug this dot around when you play the clip so it corresponds to the movements of the source on the screen.
If you move this dot to the back your rear speakers will get more volume and front speakers will get less.
You will get full surround effect.

Even if you have L+R audio you can create 5.1 final output from the L+R sources.
I will recommend using S-M microphone though so you can get full surround information from the (S+M) and (S-M)

Even such simple audio processing package like Audition allows you to derive full 5.1 information from S-M mikes. You can do it in PP if you duplicate Stereo track and then you use invert effect on one of them and sum effect on the other track. Next you feed it into the 5.1 channel and you can use this dot to make rough adjustments. For TV material is good enough:-)

However if you need more polished mixing use SONAR software or at minimum Adobe Audition.
Both packages are coming with nice 5.1 mixer plug-in.

Oh, well there ya go. The control box looks pretty small. Can you make it bigger?

If you want it bigger you have to go to Audition and use Surround Encoder

Or what I like to use is the plugin Sonitus fx set of tools, one of them is very nice surround tool that allows you to design the path of the source of sound in time and visualise it on the screen. You can drag and move these curves around with mouse.

Click on all the fx tools there to see the screen shots.

Here is an example of sound path plan going in and out around you in Sonitus surround encoder plugin.

Yea, that's more like it. This is why I love Vegas. Everything you see there you have right in your NLE with Vegas. Don't know why audio can't be built into the same program you use for editing. Talk about making it easy to share the project with your different post desks. Guess it has to do with making more money...
