  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ok so I watched a couple videos and read a couple of posts about this topic and so I wanted to be clear. If I have a 320gb Red Drive and I am shooting in 4.5k at 24p, I have to format the drive to that mode? So I couldn't then shoot an interview in 24p and then shoot a couple other shots at 2k in 120fps? I have would to reformat the drive to shoot at 120fps?

No need to reformat. You can freely change resolutions and RECORD framerates on the same drive. The limitation is that you can only have one PROJECT TIMEBASE (essentially the playback or edit project framerate) on a drive.

If your project timebase is 24fps, whatever framerate you record will play back at 24fps. So recording at 120fps will playback at 24fps, or a bit less than 5 times slower.

Note: whenever the record framerate differs from the project timebase, you are by definition recording in Varispeed mode, which does not record any audio.

Ok gotcha that is great. So I can basically format the drive for 24fps and then shoot 24p for a little and then if I want some slow mo, I can shoot at 120fps with no problem because I will be interpreting that 120fps to 24fps in post?

You are correct

yes. he just means you cant shoot for 24P playback and 30P or 25P etc on same drive. The frame rate you record at is independent of the playback speed you choose - good luck!
