Sorry if this has already been discussed thoroughly, I'm pretty new and could not find anything.

I understand that switching between PL mount and the Canon mount is a field safe procedure. What I am wondering if besides just unscrewing the bolts that attach the mount, if something additional has to be attached in order to allow the newer canon lenses smart functionality. If not, how does the canon mount communicate with the camera in order to do something like to switch the iris?

Thanks

Fidel

The Canon mount is electronic and interfaces with the camera through its electronic connections, you can see them in the third picture here: http://www.red.com/store/accessories/product/dsmc-ti-pl-mount

There is nothing else that needs to be attached. Only takes a couple of seconds to switch from PL to Canon mount by unscrewing the 4 screws.

The mounts have electrical contact points on the backs. No additional pieces needed. Field safe procedure. Body comes with needed tool for the 4 screws...

The RED Canon mount is what is called a 'smart' mount (not a 'dumb' one), which means it has electronics built into it. These electronics plug into the camera underneath the mount, so the lens and camera can communicate to each other through the lens mount itself, there's nothing extra to add.

lol, thought I'd be first to answer, but I write too slow.

As there are electronics in it, electrostatic damage precautions should be observed while handling the Canon mount while detached. Basically earth yourself immediately beforehand, handle only the outside, and avoid touching any components or contacts.
