Hi guys,

I'm looking at purchasing a tripod for my new Scarlet Dragon - specifically, the Manfrotto 536 legs and 509HD head.

I just wasn't sure if I'd be able to easily mount it to the head using the gear I already own, or if I'd need to buy an additional quick-release or other-typed plate.

I have this:
http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc-base-production-pack-bt

And currently, I can use the quick release plate to attach/detach the camera to the shoulder rig and it works great. I'd like to be able to attach it to the tripod in the same fashion though. Or possibly even attach the entire shoulder rig to the tripod?

Is this going to be possible with my current gear? To quickly attach the camera's mounting plate to the tripod head?

I appreciate your time.

Thanks,
Jay.

Hi Jay!

There are two ways to go about this...

One - you can get one of these - http://www.red.com/store/products/quick-release-platform-bolt-on and attach it to the Manfrotto plate and keep it mounted on the 509 head. This will allow you to quickly swap the camera from the shoulder rig and onto the tripod. The main issue with this is that anything attached to the rods will have to stay on the shoulder rig - only the camera body (and stuff directly attached to it) will move...

The other way would be to get another dovetail plate and attach that to the Manfrotto plate and keep it on the 509 head. In this case you can just slide off the whole camera config including the rail and everything attached to it off of the shoulder pad's dovetail plate and slide it onto the dovetail plate on the 509 head. This is option I would personally recommend. It is also the cheaper one too...

Hi Peter,

I appreciate the quick response. It does seem like the second option would be best. Especially if I want to add things like a follow-focus to the shoulder rig.

Thanks again!
