Hello all,

I have a question about the HDSDI output on the Epic. I have been reading that the 1080p output is a full debayer of the r3d files. My question is with regards to the compression method. Does the choice of compression 3:1 / 12:1 ect. have an effect on the HDSDI output or is the compression happening after the signal goes out through the HDSDI? My reason for asking is for external recording off the HDSDI.

Thanks
Colin

If you are recording straight off of the live preview feed, the REDCode compression ratio will not affect the output on hd-sdi.

That is excellent, thanks for your reply. Is there a plan for a 16:9 5k option?

I don't think I understand the question.

The HD SDI output is always 1080p.

It outputs the image, scaled, as its seen on the monitors/EVF.

There already exists a 5K 16:9 recording ... the in camera RedCode RAW recording.

There are no plans for external output at resolutions over 1080p that have been made public.

In any case HD-SDI does not presently support more than 1080p.

You need multi-link HD-SDI for higher resolutions, the most common is "quad link" HD-SDI for 4K.

HDMI can support 4K resolutions ... but I don't think we can expect that from EPIC without a hardware upgrade. (Perhaps with the Dragon sensor ... but no details are announced on that front so don't hold your breathe.)

I hope that answered the question, but since I am not sure I understood. I sort of shotgunned and hope that something I said is responsive.

Thanks Alexander,

Currently if you shoot any of the 5k modes, you end up having a letter boxed image coming out of the HDSDI. The closest thing that is available on the Epic is 4kHD, but you end up with a bit of a sensor crop, and wide angle lenses become less wide angle. Best case would be to have a 5k 16:9 option. I'm not interested in trying to pump through the HDMI or HDSDI anything higher than 1080p, just would like that HDSDI feed to fill the frame, and not to have a letter boxed image coming through. That's it.

cheers
Colin

+1 on the 5K 16:9 format request

Why answer a question you do not understand

This is a valid question.

Its to do with how the society here works.

Answering a question draws more attention to the problem. Even if I didn't understand or was just plain wrong, an answer brings the attention of other more knowledgeable folks, or maybe someone who is more "with it" at the moment.

Many eyes make a deep problem shallow.

That said, I do try, when shotgunning (as I call it) to give answers that meet different interpretations of the question. Sometimes, I answer the right question. This time I didn't.

Does that make sense?

16:9 Options all round please, with matching HDSDI out's for all thanks. It is the international TV format isn't it :-)

it does, thanks
