I did some searching but did not find anything specificlly addressing this...
In today's market, what would be the ideal finishing aspect ratio? At first, I would guess 16:9 (1.77:1) because that is what standard 1080p is. But, at the same time, most films are projected at 1.85:1 or 2.40:1 from film.
I would guess that for festivals or DVD distribution you would stick with 1080p (and crop the sides if you shot at 4K 2:1 to fit 16:9) and if you went on to theatrical distribution have the original files cropped down to 1.85:1.
But would it be better to already have your film cropped to 1.85:1 and just have the black bars at the top and bottom of your 16:9 frame so that a theatrical version would be virtually identical to your festival or DVD version?
And then what about 2.40:1 (anamorphic), is this only achieved when you work with anamorphic lenses? I have some knowledge as to how this would work, but I know that the RED has a 16:9 sensor and anamorphic lenses typically stretch the image to 4:3 size.
