Quantel has just released a new version of software for its eQ, iQ and Pablo systems which, among a number of other useful new features, also includes support for the RED Rocket™ accelerator board. We believe Quantel is the first manufacturer to release software that supports RED Rocket™, allowing our users to benefit from the much reduced loading and conform times RED Rocket™ enables.More info here....http://tinyurl.com/yhtdksc

Nice, but ROCKETcineX was the first in the world to release RED Rocket™™ support (even like a public alpha, beta,... releases...).

C'mon Sanjin RocketcineX doesn't really count, that's REDs own app. I actually visited Quantel HQ in the UK a few days after the Rocket was shipping and they were already testing it in the lab which was really positive because I honestly didn't think a company like Quantel moved so quickly. These guys get it and although Pablo is a $$$$$ system, it does some pretty mind blowing stuff, especially when setup with their whole genetic engineering workflow.

Emery,

I visited Quantel stand at IBC this year and have got there FCP/Quantel integrated workflow presentation and like it very much.

Nothing against Quantel...

Actually behind RED's inhouse software supporting RedRocket, I thought Assimilate had the first software release supporting RedRocket. Correct me if I am wrong.

You're wrong. Assimilate has not yet released software working with Rocket. Quantel's update to Pablo has been released.

The downside to the Quantel workflow is it still required you to import the Red media into their own proprietary format. You can select your meta data on import but thats it. If you wan't to change it, you have to reimport. Obviously RR speeds this process up but it's not quite the same thing as plugging in a G-RAID, soft importing, loading an EDL, and hitting conform. In Scratch this can literally be done in minutes whereas on the Quantel side you could be looking at 30 minutes.

The bigger problem is if there are issues with the EDL, and you need to physically browse all the footage to find a missing shot, you'd have to import all the footage and that could take hours, depending on how much footage you have.

On the flip side, once you are in Quantel land, they can do some pretty amazing stuff.

Just give us some more time Emery...

lot of BS blah blah blah yarj yarj yarj....

Shower talk: Mr. Red Scratch, Mr. Pablo Quantel

QP -My Genitalia is bigger than yours...
RS -Yes but I'm cold and it shrinks; wait. Wait when I see the RAW stuff...
QP -OMG it is growing....

RS -See, I have a pump under my skin: the "REDRocket People Creator acceleration card". It is 64 bits but it Scratch a bit...
QP -well... instead of the RED pill if you get the BLUe one you can do it in 30 minutes and you can play with two of them in real time like in the movies!!!

RS -Yeah, but you can get this little Advance Aftertought Feeling button and voila' the conformation to your dream size it is done with no time!!!
QP -Well you will arrive first at the end.. she will not be happy: you blew it!!! Duration it what it matters....

( hearing lots of girls laughing from behind the curtain... )

RS -Better cover up...
QP -Yeah... I guess...

( this is really a light hearted reply... Please Dear God Usergroup moderator do not delete it...)

Interesting... :) Always been a flame rather than iq etc.. person, but I did really like what you guys were doing at IBC.

Hi
I'm normally in 'Quantel land' myself and I agree it does some pretty amazing stuff - but I'd be interested to know which bits a non-Quantel user thinks are amazing?

Hey Jamie, I actually stopped by your place to see your Pablo setup when I was in London a few months ago. Don't think we had the pleasure of meeting. The 'amazing' bits really come into play when you have a full hardware SAM. I don't believe you guys were set up with a SAM were you? The virtualized media is just insanely cool. For anyone that's unfamiliar, genetic engineering with SAM is Quantels SAN on steroids. Any user connected to SAM can access all media in any resolution, format, framerate, bit depth, or color space you want. It took me a while to wrap my head around this and I had to see it in action to believe it. Say you have a 4K sequence on your RAID, SAM can present that file as a quicktime, dpx sequence, whatever, simply by opening up an xml and editing the data. That means a Nuke artist could open the 4K file as a 1080p DPX sequence and a producer could open it as a SD quicktime, all in realtime, no rendering.

This also extends into deliverables, once you create your 4K master, its instantly available in pretty much every format just by editing its xml file. This is made possible by some pretty beefy and expensive hardware but if you have 3 or 4 rooms going this would be an unbelievable boon to the efficiency of your pipeline.

Pablo itself (the software) is very full featured and coming from a Scratch users perspective we envy your timeline and compositing features (atleast I do). It also has killer 3D support. We've been demoing everything on the market and as of today id venture to say Pablo is all around one of the most powerful, full featured system out there. It's still not the best system for RED (but getting better with RR) but more importantly for us, it's at the very top end of the price curve and in todays economy im not sure how viable that kind of investment will be long term.

Not knocking what Quantel has done, it's very useful. However.....

The DPS Perception board was doing a virtual file system almost 20 years ago, in the early to mid 1990's. You would capture using the Perception, and it would create virtual directories for the material. You could instantly access the file as a Targa sequence, an SGI sequence, a Tiff sequence, or an AVI file, depending on what you needed (compositors and animators usually needed Targa sequences).

Everything that's old is new again.

MMost, you can go farther back for a virtual FS, the PAR board on the amiga did that (same company) and the hollywood card, did that for uncompressed!

To this day my video drives are P: in honor of the perception board!

In 1990 I was 8 years away from laying hands on my first edit system so definitely new to me. ;) And to be fair, while it may have been done before, who else is doing it now?
