Apple's Mac OS X version 10.6.7 update removes the NVIDIA Quadro 4000 display drivers during the installation process. As a result, you will not be able to boot into Mac OS X 10.6.7 with a Quadro 4000 graphics card installed. The previous NVIDIA Quadro 4000 display driver version 256.01.00f03 is not compatible with Mac OS X version 10.6.7 and so you can not reinstall this driver after installing Mac OS X 10.6.7. A new NVIDIA display driver for the Quadro 4000 graphics card version 256.2.35f05 will be available from the NVIDIA Software Downloads page on March 22nd, 2011 which will install on Mac OS X 10.6.7.

Since Mac OS X 10.6.7 will not let you boot into the OS if the graphics card is missing display drivers, you will need to install an older graphics card into your Mac in order to boot int the OS. Once you are in Mac OS X, proceed to download the latest Quadro 4000 Mac drivers from the NVIDIA Software Downloads and install them. After the Quadro 4000 drivers have been installed, you may re-insert the NVIDIA Quadro 4000 back into your Mac Pro.

nVidia and PNY deserve a swift kick to the groin for this one. Or maybe they needed a kick in the ass two months ago? OSX 10.6.7 has been seeded as several test builds to developers for some time now. It's not like they didn't know this was coming... Including Apple's specific request to developers to TEST DISPLAY DRIVERS! This came up on the Apple dev forums during the beta, it was pretty much shrugged off as a non-issue. Similar thing happened with 10.6.6. Anyone who has access to the developer seeds and installed them on a system with the Quadro4000 knew this was an issue. nVidia and/or PNY were not paying attention here.

Another trick to install the drivers after the fact, if you don't have another video card to install, is to put your Mac Pro into Target disk mode. Hold down 'T' as it boots. Connect it to a macbook pro or other mac system via Firewire or USB and start up that system, holding 'Option' then you can choose to boot from the drive in the Mac Pro. Once booted, install the new nVidia drivers. Shut everything down and restart the Mac Pro normally.

Sorry to hear about the disruptions that this is causing some of our users. Unfortunately we were only informed by Apple that they were going live with the release at the time that publicly released the update. This is the normal course of events for an Apple OS update, and we are obligated not to release any drivers before Apple has officially pushed updates out to the general public. We have been anticipating this release for awhile and have a new driver update ready to release. Unfortunately the driver release that we posted yesterday evening was found to have contained a corrupt installer, and we are in the process of reposting this driver as quickly as possible.
I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused our users.

Enough..

Enough..

Its documented on this forum on my experiences with the Quadro 4000.
It wasnt an easy ride and to date still somewhat bumpy :P
Thanks for the heads-up.
I wasnt going to update anyways since I couldnt get it to run smoothly from day one with latest 12core MP :(

+1 to Nvidia for apologising on a user forum. It still seems that users are forced to ensure their graphics driver is updated before updating the OS - when the OS update is offered via Software update, and many will not be aware of the problem before too late.

Surely Nvidia have to get their driver out before Apple updates the OS? If a new driver is compatible with a seeded OS dev release, so what? It's not exactly giving away precious Apple trade secrets, is it?

Sounds like some heads need knocking together, somewhere - but as I said, +1 for the apology.

Thanks Avid...

Thanks Avid...

Ive learned the hard way never to update an OS (PC or Mac) thanks to Avid :P

Shame on anyone for updating the production system as soon as new OS becomes available. Wait a little, until the dust settles down and the update had been tested by others.
Yep, unless tested on prisoners, dont update ;)

Just thought I'd let everyone know that we have posted the updated driver to the NVIDIA website.
