QT 7.4 = gun to my head?

So we all know not to upgrade to Quicktime 7.4 cuz it's broken. There's even a big yellow sticky here so nobody forgets.

Background: Got back to my computer tonight and Software Update had run and downloaded 7 programs, including the dreaded QT 7.4, telling me to restart to install said programs

Question: If I uncheck the Quicktime box in Software update and restart, I assume it will install all except that update? My fear is that, since Software Update already downloaded the update it will just up and install itself. Usually I get ASKED to download and install.

I know this is a stupid question. I assume all will be well, I'm quite sure, almost 100% - but I went through the re-install issue last week and don't have time to do so again before I shoot again, so thought I'd ask you lovely persons.

And if I do end up with knackered QT I want somebody else to blame....

the check box is for downloading the update. your only chance is to not accept the terms and agreements that pop up before you install, if qt7.4
has this agreement before its part of the install.

other then that you can down grade to 7.3 with other tools

Yeah, that's the weird thing - it's already downloaded. But the install is the dangerous bit, and that shouldn't happen if I uncheck the ...

Eh, I'll just restart. I'm sooooo close to being certain but it's late, I'm tired and I HATED unravelling QT 7.4 last week. At least I know how to get back to where I came from.

I feel your pain! I had to go through the process of uninstalling and installing QT on 4 machines. It's an easy process but not time effective when you have.... well, no time!

You can also do this:
In auto update check the QT update, go to the file menu and tell auto update to forget the checked update. We usually do that to avoid these kind of issues. When things get back to normal with QT, just remember that you reset it at some point to enable it for the new updates.

What type of Mac are you on and what operating system are you running? You may be okay, Red is now suggesting that you run 7.4.1 if you are on a MacPro or MacBook Pro and running Leopard. You only want to stick with 7.3.1 if you are running Tiger. We've been running 7.4.1 for a while now with no problems. Check out the recommended OS/Software configuration at the top of the support site at red.com

I'm on MBP running Leopard 10.5.2.

Needs to work for P2 as well for this weekend.

jnewm- Are you working on MBP? That's cool that QT 7.4.1 w/Leopard is possible now. You have been running it okay? Are you cutting with Prores or proxies? I have been cutting with proxies with MBP (2.5Ghz) and it's a little stuttery here and there. Looking for improvements...

Hi Troy,

We've only had our camera for about 2 weeks now, so we are still deep into testing mode. We've only been working on our Octocore MacPro at the moment. For just doing basic simple cuts, the 2k proxies work and playback great in FCP, but keep in mind that this is with a beefy computer and a very fast RAID array. Once you want to start adding dissolves and simple effects, we have to go down to the 1k proxies in order to keep everything in real-time. Regardless it works and it works well at the moment. Ian Blooms Crimson Workflow is a wonderful and essential program if you are working in FCP. We're still testing it out but I would say that we'll be buying our copy in the very near future. We haven't started testing anything out on our MacBook Pro yet, but we'll get there soon.
