  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

QR system, who's using it?

I really want to want to use the QR system, I'm just trying to piece it all together in my head and think about how it's actually going to be used in the field. I'd love to hear from folks out there currently using it. This is really just thinking out loud in case anyone else is dealing with the same questions...

I'm looking at a 95% 15mm LWS, and occasionally going to 19's for big zooms, etc. I want the camera setup for HH (shoulder mount) at a moment's notice, but sit comfortably on a tripod/dovetail system.

So I'm looking at the modular assault plate, the QR dovetail platform, and the shoulder pad to get started.

But in all reality, if I'm pulling the camera off for a hand-held shot, I want the shoulder pad - so the platform comes with most of the time. The only time I'd take the camera off the QR platform is for a special rig, and then in most cases I'm unbolting the assault plate anyway (because there arent any 3/8's mounting, underneath, right?).

I guess if it was going back and forth between a tripod and a monopod with another QR platform, I'd get it, but that seems like a limited case, and expensive.

so then if the camera is on the QR platform 95% of the time, why not get the DSMC QR plate and the 15mm LW adapter that bolts to the QR platform and isn't back-ordered:

makes sense, and actually $25 less than the modular assault plate solution ;)

Except, if this is where it's all going.. why not a riser plate, LW adapter (ala Woodencamera) and the ET hybrid core and save a couple hundred $$? Seems like I'd be paying a $200 premium for the same functionality only so that I could use the Red shoulder pad.. which, actually, is still tempting given this sort of possible setup:

so questions:

people with the QR system, are you using the "QR" part of it all the time? or does the platform just live on the camera? Maybe it ultimately just makes setup and breakdown that much easier?

Are there shoulder pad systems out there designed to bolt onto the hybrid core? (I assume the red shoulder pad DOES NOT bolt to it, right?)

Cheers and thanks for the thoughts..

I'm using the RED QR dovetail along with the QR from my OConnor 1030HDS. It's funny, at first I thought it was a complete waste having two QRs on top of each other but it's kind of nice. I can now pull the camera only from the rig, or pull the camera with rods/accessories as a single unit independently.

Kind of cool really. Adds 10oz of weight but don't think I'd notice much difference without it.

I will probably get the bolt on to put on the steadicam so I can switch back and forth easier.

The Red 15mm adapter you linked to is not 15mm Light Weight spacing.

Are you sure? According to the copy in the store:

Allows use of 15mm rods for follow focus, lens support, matte box, et cetera for lightweight 15mm configurations.

The DSMC 15mm ADAPTOR (CENTERED) is not recommended for studio offset systems"

In this pic it shows the LCD and EVF. You can not have them both at the same time. Not a big deal when not shoulder mounted a quick shutdown and switch but it wont flow from shoulder to studio with out a shut down if you wanted to use the LCD in studio not the evf.

I've been curious, does anyone know how or where that 15mm lw rod adapter connects?

Are you sure? According to the copy in the store:

yeah I was just going to point that out. And plus, studio offset 15 I believe has the same lens height as 19, so the rods wouldn't be raised up as they are in the image of the adapter.

Where is that photo from? Was it shot recently?

I think this is a dated pic. the shoulder mount isn't quite the same as the current production model.

I've been curious, does anyone know how or where that 15mm lw rod adapter connects?

the adapter bolts to the front of the QR platform; so if you detach the camera from the QR platform, you loose your rods, unlike the modular assault plate.

What I don't like about the QR system (with either the assault plate or the LW adapter) is that if I need to mount the camera in a rig where I can't use a dovetail, the I either a) loose my rods or b) have to use a QR bolt-on plate.

With the woodencamera/3rd-party riser+15mm adapter solution I have a camera with LW rods with standard 3/8's mounting so I can either bolt it to a hybrid core or to anything I want with no special aks. I'm really only bummed about loosing the epic-tailored shoulder pad =(

can anybody confirm that the bolt/pin pattern for front/back of the ET hybrid core is different than the pattern for Red's QR system? They seem to be using a very similar mounting style.

The Red 15mm adapter you linked to is not 15mm Light Weight spacing.

EDIT: never mind. It is LWS.

Yes, it is Arri Lightweight spacing, but it mounts to the base plate, rather than the QR plate on the camera, so if you use the Red QR, you leave the rods and all the stuff mounted on them behind. Now, there have been times when I've liked that, but they've always been at night, when I didn't need a matte box and its filter-holding abilities. Other times, it's been a PIA that i can't take the camera with matte box from tripod to the Clutch. Think this one through carefully.

We are using the QR system on one of our Epics...its especially nice when you need to go from sticks to HH with one camera. QR + Clutch is an awesome combo, literally 5 seconds to switch.

The QR system will be really sweet once the @#&% Modular Assault Plate ships in volume. As noted, you leave all your bottom rods behind when you detach. With the Modular Assault Plate it will be a quick switch from studio to LW 15 rod set-ups. Very useful now, but awesome in the (hopefully) near future.

It was the other 15mm mount that was the problem.

So what is the deal with the "other 15mm mount"? I placed order, but have cancelled, seeing that it is for "15mm centered studio configuration". WHAT 15mm centered? I thought (per Brook Willard and experience) that there were three rod systems:

* 19mm studio (centered)
* 15mm studio (offset, Arri, etc)
* 15mm lightweight (centered, higher)

I have not heard of 15mm studio centered!?!?!?

Most folks we've worked with use the 15mm offset, so that's what I want, and would like to be able to go to 19mm. Can I do this with the (otherwise) clever Red QR? If not, who else makes a good plate for 15 offset and 19mm?

Thank you,
Nelson
