***Problem Solved--thanks Eric Young!***

Hi guys,

So I'm finally directing my first low budget feature film next month, and the production would like to use my Red One MX. When I was shooting some scenes against a plain white backdrop this week, I noticed a purple looking haze in the image. At 320 iso it wasn't too noticeable, but when I dropped it down to 50 iso in REDCINE-X it's very obvious. It also starts to bleed through when I start color grading. Has anyone encountered this problem before? I'm shooting on the latest non-beta firmware for the R1, with Canon L glass and a Birger Canon mount. I use the same glass on my 5d Mk II and have no such problems. We start production in one month so I've got to get this problem figured out ASAP. Please, any advice anyone has would be most appreciated. Thanks everyone!

Christopher

Does the haze move with the image or is it stationary whatever you are shooting or wherever you point the camera?

Does it look different with a different lens? Does it change with lens aperture, does it change with focal length?

From your image, it almost looks like it was just the existing lighting at the location hitting the back wall ( your eyes don't always see slight colour casts of lights in a venue ).

Hi Eric, thank you for your quick response. Upon closer observation is looks like the spots may be stationary. There's only very slight camera movement in any of the takes, so I'm looking more closely now to make sure this is the case--but perhaps you may be on to something with the lights emitting something I couldn't see on set by just looking. Checking a few things now, will post again shortly. Thanks!

Ok now I feel a little silly...Eric you quickly spotted the problem and you were right. It seems the lights at the studio were emitting this purple light and I just couldn't see it with the naked eye. I just tested the camera without any lights and there was no purple circles whatsoever. Lol, thanks so much Eric. If the mods want to delete this thread by all means, unless you think it'll help other newbies like myself avoid silly mistakes. And a few panic attacks, lol.

Glad it wasn't a major camera fault!

Play on Jimi ...

Play on Jimi ...

Why do I have Jimi Hendrix in my head now?

Funny you should say that, but I was thinking exactly the same thing ... i happened to be at Jimi's last concert way back in the summer of 1970 on the Isle-of-Wight ... I seemed to recall him playing this version of Purple Haze:

Purple haze all in my frame
Lately things just don't look the same
Sensor's funny, but I don't know why
'Scuse me while I adjust my EI

Purple haze all around
Don't know if I'm focusing' up or down
Am I happy or in misery?
Whatever it is, that Red sure put a spell on me

Help me help me
Oh no no... no

Yeah
Purple haze all in my lens
Don't know if it's dust or IR
You've got me blowin, blowin my sensor
Is it tomorrow or just a cheap Scarlet renter?

No, help me aw yeah! oh no no oh help me...

Well that's what I think he was playing ... still don't quite know how we all made it off the island ... one week of sheer madness :-)

Play on Jimi .... play on.
