a relative just got his new mac pro and it's wicked fast! I went over there today to transcode some clips to prores, but when it was finished, each of the clips was only 128kb.

I'm assuming it didn't work because he doesn't have the prores codec, which apparently only installs with FCS2.

Is there any other way to instal the codec without paying the $1300 for FCS2?

Not that I know of. Yes, it's a bit confusing when Redcine/alert/rushes gives you a ProRes option even if it's not installed!

more than that, it actually churned for 4 hours, working away until all the clips were finished. and then I find each clip is black and only 128kb in size. laaaaaame.

Anyway, what the hell is the point of only making the codec available to FCS2 owners?

I can understand needing to own FCS2 to write prores, but why would apple limit other people from reading it?
