  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ProRes and Weapon

So just for the enhancement of my Knowledge Base... Pro Res is a firmware only device or is there some ASIC changes in play? If firmware only, then RED can just drop that from future firmware versions when the industry moves on from Pro Res?

And if there is a charge per camera for a Pro Res license, can they make a firmware that is Pro Res free and avoid the licensing payment?

EDIT: After I wrote the above in italics, I realized it may be cheaper to just pay the license fee than to pay coders to make a separate firmware without Pro Res.

Is there any chance for future UHD ProRes 4444 firmware update?

UHD prores 4444/XQ would make alot of sense if that is technically possible.
the there is viable prores or raw route - meaning you could deliver what ever the powers at be, wants, and it would
remove a certain perception that Red is more
complicated than other choices.

I never understood the need for high resolution ProRes. Would I even want something like that with locked settings like white balance? I mean, editing proxies makes a lot of sense for speeding up production, but whenever a cut is finished the RAW files are the best possible way to work, it's even easier than high resolution ProRes in my opinion. I really want to tap into those settings and get the best possible image out of the camera. A cut is still going to be graded and mastered so why bother with high resolution ProRes? If you have a grading software and hardware that can manage UHD ProRes files or even 6K ProRes, it will surely manage R3D files. And when Weapon is really out in the market, the processing power needed for R3D 6K will be much cheaper and better.

I was hooked for ProRes, but after a bit of thinking, we are moving towards a truly native R3D post production enviroment.

Only thing that got me intrigued was the better processing of the Dragon sensor in Weapon. Like getting lower noise.

I have a a lot of work where recording 2k 444q scaled RLF prores would be a godsend, really, instead of me having to make them afterwards.

Yes. I also have a lot of work where the 6k "low as possible" RAW is the absolute right no-compromise way to go and a 1080 422 LT proxy is what I need.

But reducing turnaround on bread-and-butter productions and higher end alike feels like it could pay off the upgrade alone.

Christoffer,

its not always a good thing giving other people the option to totally change your image,
as a DP often im not at the grading session, so having some settings baked in gives me some
comfort that what the director and I agreed on, wont suddenly be totally compromised by external powers
beyond our control.

I would rather shoot prores HQ or 4444 instead of R3D. sometimes.
Do we have that option? Disable R3D. recording and get same speed with Prores recording only.
Yes! Only proress is a option. Cf till 120fps normal magnesium 60 fps

agreed. 444xq and then 444, hq for higher framerates.
and RLF recording while monitoring with the different LUTS. + preloaded LUTS in Resolve and other grading programs, like the other major camera brands have.
