  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Prometheus...

Hehe geeky fun. Everyone else on the Internet would post pictures from the actual film, and fans would freak out. But not at Reduser. Here we go nuts over some behind the scenes photos of Ridley standing next to a 3d Epic rig. Gotta' love this place :)

New Prometheus viral spot. I think Fassbender is going to steal the show as David, the android.

Pretty impressive tearing up like that. That looked like it was all him. To cry and have no overwhelming emotion in your face is tuff.

Actors often use eye drops to help with tear production. What really sells it is the facial expressions. Some also use menthol applied under the eyes as well as menthol sprayed into the eyes. Some actors can cry on cue but it is not as common as you might think. Fassbender is fantastic but I would not be surprised if even he uses some of the crying tricks of the trade.

I think that if the Gods created prometheus and he stole the fire only to be punished and chained to a rock, then if Weyland spoke on TED that "we are the Gods now" together with this focus on David in a Viral campaign and his fascinated "great things have small beginnings", I would assume that he will become the Space jockey, the symbolic prometheus that in that sense is very obvious in Alien 1. His body will change into that after being contaminated and he will try to steal the whatever findings the humans find on the planet and fly off with it, they will then make sure it never happens and in the end he ends up on the "damn rock" (to quote Alien 1). What he steals might be the foundation of the alien life and that's why it is present within the ship in Alien.

As a side note, the "temple" or the big shaped rock with the caves (as seen in the holograph in the trailer) resembles closely to the earlier sketches of how the ship was supposed to look like in Alien 1.
Nice that they reused some design :)

I never been on set with professional actors who cannot cry by themselves. If they can't it's one of two things or both, they aren't professional actors with a lot of experience or two, the director is not there to support them. Might be time as well sometimes, there isn't time for the actor to prepare before a shot, but then again, if that is not possible for a scene with tears, the production planning is rather bad.

I'm sure that many professional actors can do it but it is very very hard and it takes years of practice. I have been acting for a number of years and I can't just start crying. I would need to really work myself up to it. I've used eye drops in the past to start tearing up. A friend of mine uses onions. Hey, whatever works. But yes, there are some actors who are known for their ability to cry naturally without any outside substance help.

Sure, but I would say that all actors must prepare before a scene and especially for something emotionally complex and the director, producers and entire team must respect and give time to such a performance. I hate how fellow filmmakers rush through scenes expecting something magical about bringing emotion. That's what I like about David Fincher, he takes the time to get it right, why bother prepare sets, lights, camera position and blocking if there isn't any time finding the subtleties.

It's a combination of taking the time needed and a professional actor who have experience.

Well the fact that there is a cut right before he cries leaves open the possibility that they used drops.

BTW, Christoffer, you should put some spoiler tags in front of that theory of yours about the Space Jockey, just in case you are right!!! hahaaha

Prometheus will run at 4K all the way to deliverables, where most versions will run 2K for regular digital projection and film recording, but they will have a 4K option, which will be delivered to select 4K theaters. I assure you of that. Ridley went as far as to say that if he bothered having Blade Runner re-scanned at 4K for the latest BluRay version, where basically nobody had the benefit of enjoying the 4K quality, that now he's shooting at 4K natively, he wants to make sure that 4K can be seen wherever possible. I was there when he said that. And Fox has agreed since these "negatives" are already 4K ready and no scanning is necessary. This movie is a BIG deal for Fox, it took them a while to convince Ridley to do this, which he wouldn't do even after vast sums of money were thrown at him. So now he's done something that most people agree far surpasses their wildest hopes, they will push this movie at many levels, but namely, as a visual spectacle by a master of visuals, so not having a 4K deliverable would be stupid. Studio heads lack vision and creativity but they are not stupid.

DCP Question ... since Prometheus is shot at 2.35 Aspect Ratio ... that means that the 4k viewing will be 4096×1716 pixels, and most people will be watching it at 2048×858 pixels ?

Also Ridley tends to use physical models and composite them, so are most of the "special effects" composited physical models which were shot at 5k ?

Ummmmm..... I'm sure the 8-9 shots in the movie without VFX will be in 4k. The other 99.9% is being done in 2k. What are you basing this conclusion on? That's running contrary to what I've heard from people working on shots. If it's 4k it'll be news to them. :P

I'm seeing a lot of CG in the trailers and not much miniature work. And even miniatures now a days are usually just glorified matte painting elements to layer behind and on top of CG.

I saw Blade Runner in 4k on a Sony projector here in Los Angeles a few years ago.
It looked amazing.

Thanks Gavin ... that would mean that the vfx are done at 2048×858 pixels (the trailers in the movie theaters look great to my eye ... which is close to what average people think).

The VFX were done by Weta Digital, MPC in London, Fuel VFX, Luma, Invisible Effects, Hammerhead, and a bunch of other smaller companies. My guess is, some of the effects will be 4K, and the rest in 2K uprezzed to 4K. It's a good question as to what the percentage is.

Stephen Nakamura at Company 3 in Santa Monica did the final color-correction on it (on DaVinci Resolve), so they were most likely heavily involved in the final conform and outputs. Given the 3D involved, I would be surprised if it was 4K end-to-end, but anything is possible, given enough time and money. I don't doubt it'll look great.

I doubt any companies are working in anything larger than the production specs except a couple shots for some odd sampling reason. Production hands out delivery specs at the beginning and that's how everyone will work/deliver their shots.
