  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

projector for home theater..

I'd be very interested to see what people suggest. I too am interested...

Panasonic PTAE-4000 is king as far as Bang for the BUCK.

As far as IQ the JVC RS series are great.

Sony is a lot better than JVC for price/perf in the 3-10K range, the VPLVW30 kills at the price, best I've seen. But all for screens under 7 feet wide to stay in the SMPTE 12 FTL range for light, you get world class imagin for cheap, but lots of light will cost you.

Modern digital projector, even cheap ones, have such good black levels and contrast ratios that negative or creative gain screens are no longer really worth it IMHO. I like Stewart Studiotek 130, or 100. The gold standard.

JVC RS20 or RS35.

We use the RS25 in our DI suite as do a few others that I know. Both the RS25 and RS35 are excellent choices for both home theatre and professional use.
We are viewing on a 147" (10.5ft horizontal) Snomatte Stewart screen in a very controlled environment. They retail between $8-10K but you can find them from reputable sellers for between $5,500-$7K. I know a guy if your interested I could refer you to Zak, his company is great, they ship fast and I bought my screen and projector + mount through him.

Below is a picture of the projector spanning 9.5ft on my living room wall, the day I received it. The screen hadn't showed up yet, just projecting right on my wall and still beautiful. Also, make sure you spend a little extra money to have someone calibrate it correctly, makes all the difference in the world in the picture quality.
Cheers!

JVC RS20 or RS35.

I agree, subjectively i really like the JVC`s image..it`s a bit more like a CRT projected image to my mind.I`ve still got a dirty great battleship CRT hanging on the ceiling and it recently gave up the ghost and i thought time to modernize!..In viewing other makes and types i find the JVC fits my needs,i prefer a more organic image and i found i didn`t get on so well with other manufactures images.

Zak, if you`ve got a chance to audition a few brands,Sim,Barco,Sony,Jvc..do so,one will jump out i`m sure..and if it`s not for critical grading then have a read through a post i made a little while ago on the matter.David was right to point out however that in critical grading stick with the neutral matte screen rather than the Blackdiamond i mention,i think it`s great,as you can pretty much watch in the day, lights on etc,but i`m not grade critical in this particular installation.

" Hi Ido, Have been considering the same myself with the JVC D-ila`s,they`re pretty excellent projector`s.I`m not sure how they match up to `pro` standards but they can`t be far off at all.Well set up they can throw an image as good as one of the better public theatres i reckon. The following article is pretty informative, callibrating the pj with a really good scaler to industry standards might be a great solution. http://www.cir-engineering.com/rs20.php. Craig the calibrator in the article is a very friendly and helpful fellow by the way.

Also consider a Black Diamond Screen if you need have less than ideal ambient light issues where you edit. http://www.screeninnovations.com/scr...i-hd-14-black/

Edit..the RS35 has a more comprehensive colour management system than the RS20(as well as increased contrast)so it can be set up pretty much perfectly. The article above pairs the RS20 with a lumagen Scaler ,and whilst it`s a fantastic highly tweakable tool, the 35 in my opinion doesn`t necessarily warrant the additional expense. And that`s not to say that the RS20 is lacking in any way,i`ve seen a demo with both PJ`s back to back..The RS20 is a total gem,the RS35 just offers that subtle edge..

Funny, I feel exactly the opposite. I prefer the DLP over anything else.

I'm sure that a 3 chip DLP produces the best images one can see however if I'm watching a movie and every time I blink or tilt my head or some white moves on the screen I get RGB rainbows on the screen I'm going to prefer to watch an LCD.
My understanding is that you do not get this artifact on 3 chip projectors however 3 chip is expensive and most DLP projectors appear to use single chip and color wheels.
